I just wanted to get some of your opinions on what would've caused this.

I think about 4 of the teeth actually broke off and are somewhere in there.

I have a spare dizzy, but should i just change fluids, pull the cover and set base timing and fire her up?

At least pull the valve cover and check the chain tension. 'Cuz the idler gear that spins the dizzy is connected to the upper chain. If you jump teeth it'll eat away the dizzy gear.
