KA Cooling issues...

I thought I had an overheating problem because my temperature gauge was rising quickly and would stay up around the top, so I limped the car home keeping the temperature down. Isolated the problem to the coolant temperature sensor which I replaced. Now the car was physically overheating with a brand new sensor so I unplugged the suspect sensor and the car runs fine, no overheating, gauge functioning normally... What could the actual problem be, I know it's not safe to run without that sensor, could it be the wiring to the sensor?
