Idle adjust question

I know this has been discussed, but do I adjust the idle with the car running or with it off. Thanks.

So all I do is pull the two tps sensor plugs, start the car, turn the idle adjust screw, shut the car off and plug in the tps again?

It bothers me that it is alittle high, I seems like it is really straining. Is there any other ways to turn it down.

Is your car stock? Could be a ton of things. MAF, TPS, and more come to mind.

Auto or Manual Transmission?

Prior to starting, take the car for a quick spin around the block...you want to warm up the engine a little.

If Auto transmission, before checking & adjusting timing & idle, you have to put the transmission in NEUTRAL to get the timing & idle set properly. Make sure you set the parking brake & chock the wheels prior to starting...you don't want the car rolling off on you cuz you forgot to set the parking brake.

Once you put the auto tranny in NEUTRAL, then disconnect/unclip the throttle position sensor harness - look for a three wire harness with the following wires, (green/black/white). The throttle position sensor harness is located by the throttle body right by the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.

Check your timing first...make sure it's at 20 degrees +/- 2 degrees.

If the timing is okay, then set your idle to 650 rpm +/- 50 rpm.

Once you are done setting the timing & idle to the required FSM specs, then reconnect the throttle position sensor harness & doublecheck the timing & idle. Everything should stay at the above mentioned specs.

A word of advise. If you plan on working on your S14, you might want to consider buying the Nissan FSM. The info comes in handy when you need it most.

That could be the problem, the block is from an s13 and the maf is from an s14. It was working fine before the engine swap. maybe I will try another one.

how would I check for a vacume leak, It might be that but my boost gauge is reading at negetive 20 pounds of vacume, so I should be tight.

when u start your car, u are just idling at 20 psi of vaccumm, U dont have a vaccum leak from what i would think, the only way i know to check them is to go to every hose and check it manually by wiggling it.

Mine is set to 700....though it goes down to ~500 if I turn on my lights and open my door...I've been meaning to check my bat. ground(since my car has been repainted by Maaco) but I'm too lazy.
