Vh45 S13 Drift Build
I figured I would make a Build thread on my drift car I just got running finally, heres a little back story of what has transpired over the last year and a half...
-I bought a running s13 hatch with most of a silvia front for $680 with the intention of stripping it and parting it out since it has a COD (front end collision but only messed up Silvia bumper THATS IT!) -After getting the car home I realized how clean it was, and saw how beat up my current hatch is (after 2-3 years of daily drifitng it), so I decided the best thing to do would be sell all xtra stuffs and what not and swap all of my stuff over to the clean shell with a paint job lol. -I was presented with an offer I couldnt refuse... Trade the turn key ka24de swap (Complete engine, trans, harness, ecu, driveshaft) for a almost complete Vh/s13 swap. HELL YEAH! So I took everything out in about 2 hours in my friends car port and quickly went to trade him before he changed his mind -For trading him that I recieved: Complete '95 Vh45de all accesories and coil packs, engine harness, ecu, maf, Xcessive motor mounts with trans mount and one piece driveshaft for s13, Xcessive alternator relocation bracket and Xcessive trans adapter plate. Also came with new valve cover gaskets and new rear main. So I traded this... ![]() For this... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now... I then traded what was left of the beatup Silvia front for some headers and exhaust. The headers arent Mazworks or anything like that, they are some fabbed up ones by a previous 450sx owner, but they work and Ive heard them on the n/a Vh they were on and it didnt sound too bad. The exhaust is also home-made by the same fabricator. So I traded this... ![]() For these... ![]() ![]() Again remeber I only paid $680 for the car running with the damaged Silvia front end. So far my only costs have been paying for the car, everything Ive recieved Ive traded for things I currently have... Now Im waiting on a buyer to (hopefully) buy my blown head gasket S14 Sr20det for $400, and I will use that money for a 300zx trans. I also gave my friend Steve my wiring harness so he can wire it for my s13. I really really hate wiring lol. So if youve read this far and your still keeping track, I need: -300zx Trans -Flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate -Shifter relocation from Xcessive -Throttle Body I also want to clean up the all the gunk and **** off the the VH and while Im at it put on a new water pump, oil pan gasket, rear main and front main while the engine is out. Hopefully I will have another update sometime soon. I cant wait to drive this thing! A guy drove down from Jacksonville to South Florida to buy my BHG Sr20. Now I can get my z32 trans! Traded this... ![]() For this! ![]() UPDATE: ![]() I made the 6+ hour drive up to Tampa and back over the weekend. I picked up: z32 n/a trans, starter, tt flywheel, tt clutch and tt pressure plate. The pressure plate is some aftermarket one, and the clutch is a 6 puck sprung. Im going to take the flywheel and clutch to Clutch House to get them resurfaced and repucked. Im starting on the engine bay this week sometime. Im going to clean it up a little, I really really want to paint it, but I ran out of money after my weekend trip to get the trans. Maybe if I can get some quick cash Ill paint it, or I might just pressure wash it and clean it up nice and leave the bay white lol. Now all I need: -Xcessive shifter relocation -Short Shifter -Throttle Body Ok so little update. Got home today and found this stuff waiting for me in the mail. I traded those S2 valve cover gaskets I had for sale for some ARP flywheel bolts and oil pan gasket, thanks DRFTBLD! ![]() ![]() Got some free time.... My good friend Paul helped me out, we took the dash out and removed all the stupid ass a/c ****. Also took out the main body harness, Im going to relocate it under the dash so I have a neat and tidy engine bay :bigthumbu Some pics... BEFORE harness was removed... ![]() AFTER--Still needs somethings removed and to be cleaned up ![]() A litte shot of the inside as it currently sits... ![]() Game plan is to finish installing body harness under dash and get wires extended/hooked up, put dash back on, and pressure wash the engine bay and start preping for paint. I didnt get too much dont over the past week or two, I was dealing with some family stuff, but now Im starting to get back on it. PLUS there are a few events comming up so my goal to have her running is beginning of August. I took off the intake to clean up the mess under there and delete all the crap, and I was feeling artsy so I decided to paint a few things. Intake runners were filthy with carbon so I took them to my friends shop, hot tanked them and cleaned them up a little as well... I also found a "Nissan" emblem ontop of one of the vh's at the junkyard so I just had to grab that. Intake with Nissan emblem I found... ![]() Intake Runners, hot tanked and lookin nice! ![]() Fuel Rail sprayed aluminum (ran out of black) ![]() Ok little update... Been buying the last bit of parts I needed. I got these things in the mail. ![]() ![]() Also cleaned up the trans and alt with the wire wheel. Trans still needs a little touching up but looks way better already. ![]() ![]() Little shot of the basic color of the engine, black top black pulleys and aluminum everything else. ![]() And Im starting to prep the engine bay. Removed battery tray and any other useless ****. Pressure washed it. About to wash it a little more and start sanding... ![]() And a little car pic, I realized there were no pics in here of the actual car so here ya go... ![]() ![]() Engine bay should be painted soon! More updates to come. More time went by... I also picked up a Mazowrx PS pump kit AND some GkTech ebrake extenders for some dope entries. I feel like I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. ALMOST THERE!!! I finally opened up a shop with some friends so we moved our cars in there and got to work. I got a clean white pop-up front end locally for a great price ![]() I pulled my subframe from my old chassis, hit it with the wire wheel and some undercoating to clean it up. ![]() ![]() Finished undercoating my wheel wells... ![]() Got my clutch repucked ![]() Almost finished prepping my engine bay ![]() Took the engine apart, put new S2 chain guides, and wire wheeled the front covers and painted them. Oh and put new gaskets and seals ofcourse ![]() I got another vh out of a q45 that my friend wanted me to help him partout. Car was running great! I drove it around for a week before pulling it out! ![]() ![]() Engine with Z32 trans and headers going on ![]() Some test fitting ![]() Ill post some more detailed pics of header fitment and clearance once Im done giving the frame rail some loving. I decided to keep the 5 lug off of a S14 Im parting out soooooo. I just picked up some new 5 lug wheels today for the hatch, XXR 530's - 17x9.5 +25 all around. Im shooting to be ready for King of Countyline event comming up. FINGERS CROSSED! More updates and lots of pictures to come soon! ![]() More time elapsed... Ok... So Im really trying to get the car running by the end of this month. I finally got some money together and I have enough free time to put all of my time and energy into finishing this beast.... I pulled the engine back out to give the frame rail some loving to fit the headers. So I put it in and pulled it out a few times today. Here are some pics of how it looked when I left the shop today... ![]() ![]() ![]() It still needs a little hammering but its very very close! I will be finishing it up tomorrow. Ive also been on a bit of a spending spree lately haha. Heres some of my goodies... Got 2 front tires mounted on the XXR's - 225/45/17... Im trying to get some 235/45/17's for the rear. ![]() Kouki Tails ![]() R.Y.O Coilovers ![]() More time passed... Little update.... Bought some OEM Type X skirts right from the Motherland! ![]() I bought some valances too from the same guy in Japan, they however are not oem... And no not OEM replicas :bigthumbu. He called the brand T.B.O's, they are much more aggressive than OEM style ones, but after searching I couldn't find another set like them. Heres the pic of them on his car, this is tho only one I have for now. ![]() Installed rear 5 lug and the rear R.Y.O coilovers. And slapped on the set of xxr's I have tires mounted on. The R.Y.O's are soooo much better than my old Teins and go wayyy lower too! I can still go like 4 inches lower than this. And keep in mind the whole front half of the car is on jackstands in this pic... ![]() I got Circuit Sports inners and outters (no pic of the outters on yet) ![]() |

Little shot of one of the tails...
![]() Getting my engine bay stitch welded ![]() ![]() Also had to do some slight modification to the headers... Being that they came off of Abe's RHD Vh setup the LHD steering shaft came into contact with these headers slightly... But nothing a little metal work cant fix. These should be pretty much done tomorrow. I will have a lot more pics of the final product... For now heres a little teaser shot. ![]() MUCH MUCH MORE TO COME! Almost finished on the headers. My welder went on a little vacation so it took a little longer than expected. Still wasn't as bad as waiting on Mazworx headers tho lol. ![]() A shot of this beast of an exhaust bolted on, just to be sure that the collectors were in the perfect spot before they get welded up. ![]() I cannot wait to drive my car! As soon as the headers get finished up tomorrow we will be doing the final test fit (thank God!) pulling it all back out and painting the bay! I was trying to have my car done by the end of this month, that was before the little set back with the headers. Update... This is what it looked like today a couple hours before we left. 4 more welds to go and shes done! Clears the steering shaft, clears the frame rails, and the exhaust lines up perfectly to the collector. Im very satisfied with the way they turned out. Ill post up close pictures of the welds tomorrow when its all done. ![]() ![]() UPDATE.... Well I know its been a few months since my last update. Things have been CRAZY at the shop, literally almost non-stop. Between parting out cars, working on customers cars, and building and selling cars Ive had little time to work on my car. Anyway Ill catch you guys up... I bought some FLCA's and a pair of modified front knuckles (only pic I have right now) ![]() Here and there I ordered some more Type X stuff... Some GPSport Valances ![]() OEM Window Louvers ![]() And OEM Type X Bumper ![]() My welder finished up my headers for my LHD setup. I don't have a picture of the finished, I forgot to take one, but I will and Ill post it up... And I got some more of the little things done on the car, installed new energy suspension sway bar bushings with the rear sway bar, started to install extended studs on the 5 lug hubs with the modded knuckles, and I got the engine bay prepped for paint... THEN I DECIDED TO CHANGE MY MIND... I stopped all work on the hatch and got to work on making some money... I sold my type x tails, sold those rare ass window louvers, bought and sold a car or two and put all my pennies together to get this bad ass car! ![]() ![]() And the best part is it has this! ![]() So after I put my Vh in I don't have to worry about dropping off my car to get the cage done or any of that b.s. Not to mention half of the wiring is already done for me with the painless wiring harness that is in the car. So now its crunch time to get the Vh in the coupe UPDATE.... Awwwwwwwww yea! Mazworx goodies! I had to get these since the custom headers I made to fit the white hatch will be staying with that car and my friend will be doing his own vh swap on my old chassis. This was literally the last main piece of the puzzle. I will be doing the gaskets on the engine ASAP and dropping it in for its final time here shortly! ![]() And I also forgot to add in here that I picked up modified ECU aswell. It was made by Wes from Nicoclub, I should see a nice 20-30hp easily and it should eliminate any "dead spots" in the Vh's acceleration so Ive been told. Has 2 stages to switch between, 2 and 3, stage 3 supposedly stops reading knock sensors and does some other black magic and pulls an extra 5-10hp in addition to the 30or so from the stage 2. So Im hoping it will be a nice N/A track setup and I will be satisfied with the power it will be making... ![]() Stay tuned! HUGE UPDATE... So yes, she's running and driving! We've only been working on it some nights after working on customers cars all day. So some things took a little longer than they would have normally, but here's the update of the last few weeks... Here's a little comparison shot of the old headers v.s. the Mazworx ![]() So since the event at PBIR was only about a month and a half away at this point and I still had not test fitted the engine yet I thought it was about time to get started... I threw her up on the lift to install some sway bar spacers so the sway bar will clear the oil pan. ![]() ![]() I didn't realize how close the Cusco sway bar and the SPL tension rods would be tho. Both of them are quite thicker than stock parts so I guess they didn't plan on that combo. Either way this is just a temporary solution to clear the sway bar and oil pan for now. ![]() ![]() We threw on some new valve cover gaskets... And I sprayed them wrinkle black while they were out. (Old headers are still on in these pics) ![]() ![]() Estie removed the pilot bearing and ground down the end of the crank so we could install the flywheel spacer, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. Sorry I didn't have any pics of the auto pilot bearing removal or the grinding of the crank. ![]() ![]() So since the lift was held up with a customers car and we had no time to spare (PBIR was only about a month away at this point) I put her up on some stands and got her prepared for fitting. ![]() A little shot of the high pressure ps line and you can kinda see the pbm rack bushings. ![]() At this point the Vh had been test fitted 2-3x's and it was pretty much in the car. It was just hitting a primary on the passenger side on the front cross member so it was still being help up by the hoist somewhat. Freddy had come over to get most of the wiring ready since the engine was mostly in the car. After a few hours we managed to get a first start out of it! With old gas, motor being held up on the hoist and nothing wired up but the basics :bigthumbu ![]() ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DYm...layer_embedded Since the header was hitting on the pass side I had to grind a chunk out of the crossmember, so some grinding was in order... It took about another day or two or working on it here and there but the engine was eventually bolted in all the way and the car was on the ground holding her own weight! ![]() ![]() ![]() I decided to test fit the hood at this point... Yea, it will need some decent spacing to clear the big ass intake manifold. NO I WILL NOT CUT MY HOOD UP! ![]() Closed shop on Sunday means free time to throw her up on the lift and finish the under car stuffs :bigthumbu Power Steering cooler mounted and lines ran with heat wrap to protect them from headers, 02 sensors installed, front end all tightened up and double checked. I was only missing a brake booster to drive the car at this point. But luckily I found a S14 booster laying around the shop that worked! (Ill post a pic of the ps cooler, lines and booster later on). ![]() ![]() ![]() So with the booster installed and everything looking good with all the plumbing done I TOOK HER FOR A DRIVE! (ONCE I UPLOAD THE VIDEO TO YOUTUBE I WILL POST IT HERE) Freddy came back over yesterday to finish up some wiring for me and get everything 100% from headlights and taillights to the kill switch and everything in between. Thanks again Freddy! ![]() So heres how she's pretty much sitting now... I still need to finish a few small things like: exhaust mounted, wideband installed, weld up a open diff and get rid of the vlsd that's in the car now and finish up some interior. But she's pretty much ready for PBIR! ![]() Thanks to my good friend Paul for all the help, and Estie and Freddy aswell, I couldn't have done it without them! The event at PBIR is March 14th, so we pushed to get the car running and still have time to fix small things and shake the car down before the big event... Well it turned out there was a VERY small tiny pin hole in one of the 2 main coolant hoses under the plenum. So I had to get these... ![]() I should be throwing them on sometime this week. I would also like to get an aftermarket water temp gauge, since I haven't seen my stock one move I'm not sure if its working or what. |

Some media of me at the drift event at Palm Beach International Raceway 3/14/14. Along with a nice Slo-Mo Reel of the "pro-layout".

Been a few months since an update so figured I would make a small one.
I hit a Three Palms Speedway drift day, it was fun although there wasn't too much media... ![]() ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsBLoYCq5Gg I also finally got my hood spaced and bolted on, yes its spaced a little more than I would like, but at the moment it has ZERO modifications to the hood. So I shall see about trimming a part or two and trying to get the space to close a bit more. But honestly Im just happy to have a hood on my car again so I don't have to worry about the Florida rain while she is on the trailer to and from events anymore. This is the only picture I have of the hood bolted on the car at the moment. ![]() More updates to come with PBIR just around the corner again... |

^JIC's. Best coils Ive owned so far!
Another small update. Got a passenger seat from my friend... Needs a very good cleaning. ![]() Got a roof wing finally! Just a teaser for now, will post another pic after its painted and installed. ![]() And another shot of the car with the hood on finally. ![]() After I get my paint and body guy to color match the existing silver on the car I will get enough paint to get the hood, fenders and skirts painted. Its coming together slowly but surely... |

Bought some Varrstoen es2's. 18x9.5 & 18x10.5. Nothing crazy but better than the xxr's, and now they can be added to the pile of drift spares.
Heres a pic of how it sits now after putting on the rims and lowering it a little... ![]() |
