here's the deal, my computer won't start up. i changed some memory settings to see what they'd do and i screwed up...but that's not the point! my computer won't start up right because it says some kind of memory error. i can NOT go into fail safe mode, and the recovery disc makes the computer crash. the recovery disc is not scratched. there is no option to go into any other mode, it automaticly goes into windows 98 mode. please tell me there is some button you gotta hold down to MAKE it go into fail safe mode, because 'control' isn't working.

I once tried to change the idle on my ka. I got the air/fuel mixture screw instead. Don't ask me how. I literally sat turning that screw for 5 hours (five) before I got the correct mixture back. In other words, now that you're up shit creek, you might as well just play with it until you fix it.

where did you go to change mem settings? BIOS? if so just hit del or F2 or whatever you have to push on your comp to get in there and do your best to change it back. Give us more detail on how you f*ked it up Oh and if you hold F8 before the win98 startup screen you'll get a menu saying 1) normal 2) something 3) safe mode 4) something else 5) step by step confermation or something like that. see if you can get into safe mode and get back to us.

Haha. This is why I have a job. Because people who know nothing mess around with the shit that they shouldn't.

Anyways, did you change settings in the BIOS, or was it in windows? Like the guy said before, if it is in windows, hold F8 when the computer is starting up so it will go into safe mode (you have to select it), and the changes will not load. Then you can go in and change them back to the way they were before.
If you changed the bios, reset it. Try pressing del when the mem check is happening, then go to the reset option.

Hope this helps... Hahaha

when my computer was working, i changed memory setting is msconfig, where it says advanced i set my computer's memory limit to 16MB (i have 128) just to see what it would do (well i know now!).

and i finally got it to give me the option to run in safe mode, but then it only says <a:> and i can type stuff but nothing happens. if i let it start up normally, it will boot up as normal, then it says

While initializing device IOS:
ERROR: Real real system memory allocation failed.

I believe win98 requires 32MB ram to boot, so when you limited it to 16 you kinda screwed yourself...heh i guess thats why the tab says "advanced" heh also why I have a job... Anyway I'm not really sure how to fix it except (I dono if '98 has this or not but) when you hold F8 instead of going into safe mode, try "last known good configuration" and see if that will set it back for you.

Yadood, you need to be a wee bit more specific. Remember you are our eyes, we have no clue what's going on on your system unless you tell us. Make sure you're in Safe Mode not Safe Mode Command Prompt Only. From there you *should* be able to reenter msconfig and reset it. Win98 does require 24 megs of RAM (box specs), though you might be able to squeak into safe mode on 16.

when i go into safe mode, it goes into dos and says <a: or something. basicly it looks like when you go into dos except it has an A instead of a C. i don't know what to type in dos to get to msconfig or if it's possible. wouldn't that mean i can only access stuff on the a drive?

you're going into safe mode command prompt only.... You can change the settings from there though. If you type "edit", it should bring up an editor where you can open the files you need to change. They'll be .ini files. most likely win.ini or system.ini Open those up, and you can go back to the original setting. Make sure you do this in binary though, IE 128 megs of ram will be 131072k, not 128000k

ok check this...
you get a Win98 boot disk, insert it into the drive, then start the pc, it will do the normal loading process then it will boot up off the disk, it will ask if you want CD support, choose that option, then once you are in command promt, type in format c: ( c: being your hard drive, or whatever letter you chose for it), then let it format away, and reinstall windows on it... format option is the biggest problem solver in the computer world...lol
USE THIS ONLY AS A LAST RESORT, and watch out, it will erase ALL of your files and saved work and what not.
