Would walmart brand 80w90 gear oil cause this..?

Sometimes my car makes a little scrape when i try to put it in gear, i put it cheap gear oil 80w90 from advanced autoparts. Should i put in the expensive stuff, if so what?

not the wal-mart brand oil by itself, but being a rather old transmission its probably a little bit worn.

My fastback used to grind a little until I put redline fluid in the transmission, my s14 would even grind a little sometimes when I skipped from 3rd to 5th gear,

Some of the cheaper oils have breakdowns as far as viscosity is concerned in moderate heat ranges. Redline, Royal Purple, and Speed Master oils are what I have used in three different cars with no problems over the last decade.

my trans has 210 kms on it and its still smooth as glass, sometimes a little clunky when its cold out though.....I change the fluid every year

thing with the cheap stuff is that as long as it has the approval sticker badge thing on it, its going to be just as good as something more expensive. Wal-Mart brand is probably quaker state anyhow- Last time I looked WalMart didnt own any refineries

Umm...it absolutely would make it grind if the back of the bottle said certified up to GL5. Our trannys have to run on GL4. The additive to make it a GL5 may be corrosive to the synchronizers. GL5 is what you want in the differential but not the transmission.

GL5 will eat brass synchros. Avoid it like the plague.
