A hunt for the person or persons responsible for the deaths of 11 brown pelicans, whose wings appeared to have broken deliberately, continued Saturday, backed by a $5,000 reward that may spur someone with information to step forward, officials said.

The pelicans are believed to have been attacked during a 48-hour period beginning Monday.

The Wetlands & Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach, which is caring for the lone surviving, female pelican, has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible, said the center's Debbie McGuire.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also investigating the inccident, she said.

Lisa Birkle, assistant director of the facility, said "these injuries appear to be intentional.

"This does not naturally happen to 11 birds in the span of three days. We have never had this many similar injuries in this short an amount of time on the same beach."

The birds were discovered on Monday and Tuesday by lifeguards at Bolsa Chica State Beach. All had broken wings.

Another four were still alive, but three had to be euthanized and only one, a female about 3 years old, is still alive, McGuire said.

"The breaks were compound fractures, which are bones broken in two," she said.

She explained the breaks would be the equivalent of a human with an arm broken from the elbow to the wrist.

Bone protruded from the surviving pelican's skin with three to four inches exposed from both wings, she said.

The breaks run in the opposite direction than might be expected if it happened in flight, she said.

The dead birds were all younger and may not necessarily have a fear of humans, McGuire said, adding they were hatched on the more remote Channel Islands.

Most of the birds had small fish hooks and line caught on their bodies, such as that used by casual fishers, but this is not uncommon, she said.

The one survivor is in guarded condition because she may be suffering from a shoulder dislocation, which caused swelling and made it hard to detect the exact injury, McGuire said.

The birds, left at sea with broken wings, could not fly. While paddling in, they apparently got tumbled up in the surf, with most drowning, she said.

No similarly injured birds were brought to the center, McGuire said.

Anyone with information about the bird's injuries was asked to call Special Agent Ed Newcomer of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at (310) 328-1516.

i dont think its teens or bums cause it says they are being broken out while out at sea or whatever and then dying while trying to paddle in... fishermen perhaps?

Last time I went fishing down at the pier this guy tossed a piece a hook with a piece of mackerel on it and a big weight to a pelican. All I saw was a pelican flying away with a weight dangling down out of its mouth. If I had known which person in that little group did it I would have tossed the fucker off the pier.

If I found who was breaking pelican wings, well somebody would be out $5,000 and somebody else would have a golf club through the knee caps.

Alot of serial killers start off hurting animals and shit so if i was living in that area...i would watch out.

If i could catch the guy, i would trade in the 5,000 for 5 min alone with the guy in a locked room with a knife and a blowtorch.

i seen something similar in SF. it was a gull that had it, it was just walking/flying around with it in it's throat. but i didn't see the person that did it.

California has crow hunting season and i don't think there is a min number of birds you can shoot and you just throw them away when your done

Wow, that is fucked up!!!! I go fishing all the time on M street dock in Newport Harbor. And there is a bunch of pelicans sitting in front of us as we throw our line out with live bait and they don't bother us once in a while we'll feed them or scare them away so they don't get caught in our lines. But i hate it when i see bunch of 18 year olds or 17 year old fucking around with those animals. They didn't do shit to no body its very annoying though at the peir how those guys fuck around with the birds or seal. Don't get me wrong i mess around with the seals too but i make sure they don't get to the fish as im reeling up what i catch. Fuck those guys who killed those pelicans thats pretty fucked up.....

omg it says the broken wing is equivalent to a human having a broken arm from elbow to wrist. i could only imagine how painful that would be. poor pelicans i know they can be annoying cuz they poop everywhere but they dont deserve to have their wings broke.

i hope they catch that guy/girl and put em away for awhile and while there at it break his arms from elbow to wrist.
