The rattling has gotten louder and I jacked up the car and started it and the noise seemed to be coming from the tranny.
It only happens when I start it, or leave it in park, and while driving at 3000 rpms. Any ideas, its a auto and I need it to get to work and school. Please help me. jonh |

i believe i've tracked the noise down to the bell housing(?) were the engine meets the tranny, anyone ever hear of a flywheel bolt coming loose and rattling around? and if it is the tranny how much would a shop charge to do a 5-speed swap?
because I don't think I have the tools or knowledge to do it myself. |

I had the same problem but my car was a 5spd... but that shouldnt be the reason for the sound its making... i was told by the mechanic that the sound is coming from the camshaft bearing inside the engine which is somehow broken. And its not a GOOD thing cause after about a week the sounds just keeps getting louder and it changes from a little rattle to clanking grinding sounds and eventually itll either blow up or just die (like my car).l Maybe this is not your case but it sounds almost exactly what my car went through. but if this sounds irrational, just take it to a mechanic.
So i say plan to get a new engine soon and while your at it... you can swap it to a 5sp <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> good luck Hope this helps... |

Have you checked the bottom of your trans pan for metal pieces? How many miles do you have on it? If it's over 130k(or if you drive it hard), I wouldn't be surprised if something was going to let loose. Especially if it's getting louder. Get a metal stethoscope and pinpoint exactly where it's coming from.
The last time I had a rumble in the bellhousing, it turned out to be the 3rd bearing in, which had ejected it's cage to my magnetic drain bolt. (Manual) I believe it's the same setup as far as bearings and front input shafts go. I could be wrong.

I've had 5 flywheel bolts come lose, and make rattling noises hitting the clutch. I had to redrill and tap all the holes for new bolts. And that's not very fun when the car is on jackstands.

okay the car has 109,000 miles on it. I had a couple mechanics from my friends shop look at it and they are convinced its the starter staying engauged and hitting the flywheel. I guess the only way to tell is to take the car to someplace and have them drop the tranny and look.

If the starter is staying engaged, then you are probably grinding off the starter teeth as well as flywheel teeth.
Meanwhile, a poor man's stethoscope would be to hold a long piece of rubber fuel line to your ear as you direct the other end to the suspected noise. BTW, works great for exhaust leaks.

could be anything that ended up in the bell housing- pieces of pressure plate, clutch, flywheel, etc...
dropping the tranny sounds like your only option (but it is something you can do yourself). if youre not up to it, just wait until tomorrow and check with a mechanic. *edit* whoops just re read that you have an automatic- same deal, only I've never worked on an automatic, and from what I've been told, I'm not sure I would bother- take it to a specialist. |

i took it to a shop and they dropped the tranny and it seems two of my flywheel bolts fell out and were banging around. I now need a new flywheel and a new torque converter. So $800 down and I've come to realize just how much automatics suck.
