hopefully it is something simple. i cant really help u hear because i dont have an sr, but common sense tells that it could be a timing chain guide or where the cam lobe hits the valve lifter

SOME cars (240sx unknown&#33<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>) you can run the engine at IDLE with the valve cover off......just have to watch carefully for oil overflow cuz engine's at slight tilt (would make a real mess cuz it'd spill on to turbo manifold <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'> ) this way you can see and hear the valvetrain to possibly pinpoint the noise. SOME cars (sorry again 240sx unknown <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> ) won't hold an idle with valve covers or vent hoses off cuz they rely on a vacuum, so this might not work.....but won't hurt anything....worth a try! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
u haven't been round for awhile.....how's the strut bar project?? turned out there is a hole in the rear, Cusco does use them, and goes thru the trunk! very nice. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

If your opening it up to check for the timing noise, its pretty easy.

The chain guide sits on top of the ka24e, held together by a couple of bolts. Regardless if its cracked or not, simply remove it.

While you have the valve cover off, you might want to check your rocker arms, the cam, and everything else. Look for wear, burn mark, and any white residue. If you got some white residue/marks, it means that you've good coolant leaking, or the head gasket is going soon.

Once you are done, clean off the mating surfaces, put the rubber gasket back on, squirt a little make a gasket on it, and tighten the bolts back up. The FSM has the torque sequence and lbs of torque to use.

Good luck!
