As long as you have an LSD already you can easily pull the old unit out, install the new one, and reshim it if necessary. If you have an open diff you'll need the correct output shafts also.

can you install a vlsd into a stock open diff?? and if so are the axles the only special thing you would need?

Output shafts, not axles. Axles are the same.

Hate to tell you this, but I have no idea what these guys are talking about.
If you are swapping the internals, you reuse your ring gear, however; it's going to need to be reshimmed. Shim kits are about $100....just not cost effective to do it once off. Plus there are some special tools needed and in general rear end work ![]() You are much better off just buying a center member complete even if you have to swap covers. I have thought about the HLSD from a S15 before I decided to do just a VLSD with no abs from Japan for my 98SE. The HLSD would be close to $600 once shipping and the output shafts were sourced, then anywhere from $50-200 for the service/install (not to the car just the rear end assembly). I figured for about twice that I should just get the Quaiffe and the lifetime no questions asked warranty that goes with them. Of course before my suspension, turbo, etc spending $600+ on a differential is just plain not practical. Å |

Quote:
If you pull your ring gear, swap the open unit for a VLSD, and put it back together with every shim in the exact same spot...no problems. MANY, MANY people have installed KAAZ diffs in this manner...not even an OEM part...and have not had to reshim, as the backlash and stuff has been in spec after the install. I have installed a VLSD into an open diff housing with no ill effect in over 12,000 miles... As you pull everything apart, lable and keep it in order...then put it back EXACTLY as it was...you'll have no issue. Now, it's still a PITA, but do-able. - Brian
