Okay, I'm a big MR2 and RX-7 fan, but my sister is starting to look for a car and she said she either wanted a civic or a 240sx, and I'm like 240SX!!!!! Dont get the civic!

Anyways, I dont know much about the 240sx, other than its rear wheel drive, and a lot of fun to drive.

Okay, what should I look for when I'm buying one? How are they from a reliability standpoint? What generations were there from what years? What are some reasonable prices?

Thanks a lot and sorry about the newbie crap, you probobly get that a lot.

89-90 are the SOHC, 91-93 are DOHC. 89-93 you can get a coupe or hatch, hatch is easier to find. all 94's are 4sp auto convertables. 95-96 and 97-98 have different headlights. and...i don't know much about them because i don't need to (i own a 90). the reliability is great on these cars. i now have 186,000 miles, bought the car with 132,000, i beat the crap out of it every day, but i also take care of it (possible?). some reasonable prices are 1500-3500 for the older models and 5000-8000 for the newer. don't worry, it's not newbie crap, we don't mind those questions. only the SR vs KA engine questions

Yeah, James pretty much covered everything you need to know...and 240's are Cheap dude! like, i've seen some in the 90's going for like, 5 grand...
Anyways, im sure you can find a really nice 240 for your sister, its a little harder to control for a beginner tho, cause of the rwd, and that its like, 3rd or 4th best drifting car (next ot a HachiRoku and rx7, and s13 ) but yeah...u should be able to get one real easy...
go to like, autotrader.com and yeah, u should find one real quick for a reasonable price...
good luck on gettin one dude.

LOL @ whatever James. The KA vs SR questions are a great waker upper in the wee twilight hours huh?

Oh yes, we were talking about buying a 240sx....

The previous posters covered good points. The sohc cars are the better buy if you plan on modifying, since you will probably be swapping motors or building one up. If its gonna be a daily driver, get the best one you can afford, thats been maintained well. This way, you won't have any downtime with the car.

You'll love the way these cars handle; even when stock. Lookout, ur sister may be pissed cuz you'll always be borrowing her car!

geeaj, you scared me for a second when you said that he SOHC engines are better for modding!!! Not true, the SOHC are only better if you plan on doing and engine swap, otherwise, go DOHC, and then go from there. Even if you decide to do an engine swap later, it won't be that much of a difference $$$ wise (obviously no $$$ difference for the swap, just for the car w/ DOHC, do I make any sense...I'm just rambling).

Sorry for the confusion.. I meant that the sohc cars are usually cheaper, at least out here in the west coast. And you plan on doing an n/a buildup go SOHC. If you want to do turbo or keep it stock, get a dohc. You get more power for your dollar..lol

Just get the 97-98 240sx SE or LE. It's the best 240sx!
