Bad Cat Converter
i just had some bad news the other day. My aftermarket cat took a shit. It's rattling like somethings loose underneath the car. Had it up on the rack and found the cat rattles like it's got a rock stuck in there.
So anyways, I'm concerned about my muffler. I already ordered a new cat but I haven't replaced it yet and I just found some white crap in my tailpipe from the cat. I've gotta take my silencers out to get the crap out but i'm just curious is this stuff going to take out my muffler in the process of being shitted out my tail pipes? I have and N1 dual so luckily only one of the cans is blocked right now. I just noticed it this morning at work so I have to wait till I get home to get it out. I heard that you can just remove the cat and hollow it out, how do you do this? Is there any special tools req'd? I'm thinking just smack it around a bit and turn it into a test pipe, just until my other one gets here. Now I have to drive about 400 miles this weekend before I replace it, should I do this now or just wait? hmmm.....any info would help. thanks guys and gals.

Must be that time of the time... My cat is bad also, causing strange random power loss. I ordered a new high flow from PDM, I hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as yours! GL with your cat
I'm sure if you search around you'll find people's guttting techniques... I think a rod or a long drill bit will break the stuff up in there, then just turn it over and let it fall out. |

Don't gut your own cat, the stuff inside is very bad for you. I believe there is a market for buying used cats (after just reading a story where some people were stealing used cat-convertors) so take it to a muffler shop and tell them to cut you a check or make you a straight pipe.

if you do decide to gut your cat, you need a pipe and a hammer and just hammer it out. takes about 15-20mins depending on the condition of the cat. you can also use a drill to just drill it out. make sure you have proper ventilation and possibly a mask so that way you dont breath none of that stuff in.

cool thanks guys. I've already ordered a replacement, got the same cat Random Technologies high-flow for 200 shipped. Just looked up the tracking yeasterday and it's not gonna be delivered until Tuesday!! D'oh!
I removed my silencers last night and a big chunk of that honeycomb looking stuff came out. It still rattles though, damn it.... Here's a question....once I've replaced it, should I remove my exhaust system and check it for jammed chunks of that stuff? I'm pretty sure they would blow out but you never know, right? I mean the apex N1 dual has 2 1/2 inch pipes so I would think the stuff would just blow out but maybe not....? Damn if I have to do that it's gonna suck. I hate having to go back to parts that I've already put on the car. It's like a checklist of mods and once they're on and running good I don't want to have to worry about them again. damn it....

Get a test pipe. Just cut the whole cat off and weld a pipe in it's place. Problem solved! And another thing, don't get caught. Weld a heat shield over it.

I should be more specific, I have Hotshot headers oonnected to a Highflow cat, connected to my N1 dual. So there can't be any cutting or welding involved. Everything's bolt on parts. Funny thing is these parts actually fit together better than the stock parts did with my exhaust....hmph.
