Aaaaah....timing chain rattle, take 2

well I opened it up today and removed the topmost guide, it was gouged to hell so i figured thats what was making the noise.

I noticed the 2 other guides which require taking off the front timing cover. I gave the driver side part of the chain a little tug and it was a wee bit loose and when it hit the guide on that side, you could tell that THAT was what was making the sound

so i have to do it all again on friday, in a heated garage (its 30 below here right now)

those 2 guides behind the front timing cover are delete items too right?

and apparently you can use a flathead screwdriver and some WD40 to possibly free up the tensioners cause you can access them once that cover is removed, correct?

Question is, since i KNOW which guide is making the noise now, do i just

a)remove the guide (s) behind the front cover
b) Try and "free up" the tensioners?
c) both?

is simply removing the noisy guide a solution? or is it rubbing there because the tensioners are out?

There's only two guides total that are deleted. Top, and upper. The lower one stays.

more questions about this rattle. I was going to post on the forum about it, but I wasn't sure if I could be specific enough with the description of the rattle.

On that website you linked, it says it can be heard during idle.

That's true for my case. When the car is actually being launched though (the minute it's in first and I engage the clutch partially), I can't hear the rattle at all.

-When I hit or kinda shake the steering wheel, the sound goes away for a split second, and then returns.
-When the defroster or A/C is on, the sound CANNOT be heard.
- The sound is pretty rhythmic, and almost sounds is if it was coming from the area between the dash and engine bay.

Are these the symptoms of the timing chain rattle?

Yes. And there's a lower guide and tensioner behind the lower cover, but you keep both of those.

Turdz, your problem does not sound like timing chain rattle. If it was you would hear it if you put your ear on the valve cover towards the front of the engine.

is it possible to leave the rattle alone if its not too loud. my sr20 does it...but its not so loud that you can hear it with out listening for it. i dont wanna take the front cover off again...i had to replace it once and that was a bitch.
