Yet another "wierd noise" thread

This time, it seems to be transmission / diff related. My fan clutch is also out, but I think this is unrelated.

Anyway, I'm getting a wierd rattling / rapping noise. It seems to be coming from the transmission or possibly the diff. It seems to be coming from that area. Additionally, it makes the noise while moving, no matter what gear or whether the clutch is depressed, and stops as soon as the car stops. It's also obviously connected to the speed of the vehicle.

One thing that's a bit odd is that it seems to be louder in the car. I've opened my windows to try to hear, and the sound is much less audible. So it seems it's coming from under / in the cabin.

i had a noise issue somewhat similar after i installed a clutch in my 98. when i disconnected the exhasut i reused the gasket which was all rusted so when car was under load or anytime other then stopped i had a rattle noise which sounded like it was comming right from the tranny since exhaust pipe is right near it. took me a while to figure out.

does frequency change when you engine brake?

Yeah, it does, actually.

The thing is, though, I don't have an exhaust. Just manifolds, into a gutted cat, and that's it.

Speaking of which, any reccommendations on a muffler shop in the SF Valley?

Oh, i've got another question, by the way. My car's a '95, but with a '98 motor. Our parts computers list the two cars as having different fan clutches and water pumps. Is there really a difference?

I've got a full time, 40hr a week, job. I don't have the time or the energy to spend trying to learn to weld up an exhaust.
