Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed that engine has started to sound like a diesel engine. My friend told me that I may have to get my valve springs tighten. I just wanted to get some opinions on what may be causing this noise.

If this is a ka24de, then yes, you most likely need to have your valves adjusted. Check the FSM for the recommended adjustment intervals.

If this is a ka24e, then the valves do not need to be adjusted. Does this noise only happen when the engine is cold, for instance, upon startup? Or does it happen when your motor is running?

You may want to check oil pressure as well. Have you replaced your oil pump?

If its a dohc, get your valves adjusted and take it from there. You can always pull off your valve cover and take a look. There is also the upper timing chain guide issue, so it may be worthwhile to take it off. It could also be the guide starting to break.

I'm also having noise from my 91 S13 making a high-pitched sound of rushing air (the diesel engine sound?) when the engine is cold. I don't notice it after driving for a while. But I need to drive without music and windows rolled down to be sure because it's been a few weeks since I last heard it.

If I had to tighten the valve-springs, how would I do this? Is there a write up somewhere, or does the chilton's manual provide enough information to do this?

Try this... Go as fast as you can in first gear then clutch in and hold it. I bet you'll hear the same grinding sound, but higher pitch, and the pitch will drop as the car coasts down. My car does this. It's actually making the noise whenever the transmission input shaft is spinning, but you don't notice it when the car is moving because of tire noise and engine noise.

I'm hoping it's just the throwout bearing and not something really expensive.

if you rest your foot on your clutch pedal just enough to get resistance does it go away? It definitely sounds like a throwout bearing to me.

I brought this thread from the dead again

My ka24e has a rumbling cyclical noise. it usually will come up after 5 seconds when i start the car and the noise will be there till i shut off mycar. when i rev up the motor, the noise would rasing and then disapper, but gets even louder when the rpm droping. Also, i tried to jiggal around the main harness and i found the noise might momentary go away as when the rpm swim up and down.

anyone know what it is? is it just exhaust leak? or something else

thanks
