5 Speed Swap Pricing

New user here and I'm looking to jump into the 240sx scene, only problem is the 91' 240sx Coupe I'm looking to purchase is AT. I've already researched a bit on these forums to see what exactly is needed and the pricing for it, which is around $500 if you do the labor yourself(taken from drive freaq's guide). So my question is what's a good estimate on how much it would cost to have an autoshop do it for you? Thanks in advance.

P.S. I'm going to check in the morning how much shop's charge for labor, just seeing how much it normally goes for so I don't get ripped.

I have been waiting for a 91-93 240sx coupe 5spd to show up(3 months now) and it doesn't seem like it's going to happen here in vegas anytime soon. If I end up buying the car I'll probably wait until I'm able to do a sr20det swap to save money instead of doing it right off the bat, I'm not sure though.

i think theres a buncha threads on this if you search a little more, but lets see...if your gonna do a 5 speed conversion on the KA24, the main things that youll need is a 5 speed transmission (clutch and flywheel if it doesnt come with it), a manual gauge, an ECU fromm a manual (i think), a stick shift + shift boot + shift knob, a clutch peddle and all the fluids that'll be needed (clutch fluid and transmission fluid)...correct me if im missing anything else. If your gonna do it at any autoshop, its gonna cost you a grip because autoshops can rip you off like that.
I cant really tell you how much ittle be because price may vary. If yout hink about it, autoshops will charge you atleast $600 for a manual transmission. A clutch will be atleast $300...you do the math.

If i were you, i would either...:

1. Look around, make friends, do a lot of research and find people who can give you a hook up on the conversion for cheap.

2. do it yourself. go to junk yards/ebay/craigslist and gather up all these parts. you can find a tranny for like $200. (the cheapest ive seen was $150)

3. Do an SR20 swap and buy a front clip. (front clip includes EVERYTHING youll need to do a manual conversion....PLUS an awesome engine) it'll cost you atleast $2400. but worth every penny.

last but not least 4. be patient and wait for a manual 240sx. 5 speed conversion is too much of a hassle IMO.

well, good luck man. Welcome to the zilvia world.

I already know what is needed to do the swap, I just don't know how to do it myself. Your #1 answer is something I can probably do, but I asked the autoshop question is just incase it doesnt happen. It's either #1 or #4 and just drive the 240sx the way it is til it's the engines time.

I've seen quite a few shells, cars without motors, selling for under $1000. Id assume a good running 91 auto probably goes for around $2k if not more. This way you could swap in a good, low mileage, late model, KA engine/tranny, or SR in for a pretty good price.

if i were you, i'd just wait for a 5 speed. Some friends and I just finished the 5 speed swap on my car and its a pain. Its not thats its all that hard, its just annoying and tedious.

Well, I guess I'll hold of for a little bit since everyone is recommending it. Hopefully a 91-93 240sx coupe 5spd will show up in the near future, thanks for the advice guys.

man, first off get my screen name right i.e. its drift freaq not drive freaq. Ok that out of the way . If you really have a hard time finding someone to do the conversion for you hit me up. I can hook you up with a decent deal. If we do not do it ourselves for you . Yes you heard me right. We are in the process of starting a shop. We will be doing SR swaps RB swaps and other cool stuff that will be out of the ordinary. Including stuff like ITB NA SR's ( Partners car as seen at the Eibach meet).
Disregard these guys that say its a pain. Its only a pain if you choose to make it a pain. I have swapped way to many auto's and all I can say is if you do it the right way its not that much pain at all. Your toughest part is using the right tool to cut the hole for your clutch master and pedal. We nailed that one and no we are not giving away that secret. hehehhehehhe but we will do it for you!!
also do not repeat do not put in the manual brake pedal unless your a masochist and love lots of extra work dropping your steering column. Cut that auto brake pedal. Again use the right tool its a ten minute job. Do it right and the stock manual brake pedal rubber fits right on.
Also on a S13 you really do not need the manual ecu , auto ecu is actually a performance upgrade for the KA . Why ? you might ask, well because the speed cut does not exist in the auto ecu. On top of that the rev limit is at 7200 rpm. On top of the that the tuning curve on the auto ecu is different due to the way auto trannies work . It all translates out to a little more performance for free.
If you do go SR then the swap is a breeze as well because you get a lot of the parts needed for the swap on the clip i.e. tranny crossmember , tranny , lower shift boot, backing plate is already with the engine, clutch pedal from the clip , lower shift boot from the clip, driveshaft from the clip. All you need to go out and get is the clutch line and the upper shift boot. Yes you can use the clutch master from the clip and the slave. Anyways its up to you but I buy auto cars. In fact I like buying auto cars they are usually in better condition because the drivers do not beat them as much as 5 speed cars.
If you have found a really nice clean auto car for a decent deal buy it . YOu may be searching for a long time to find the 5 speed version . Its like buying a base model when you want a se no sunroof. Especially a 92 SE no sunroof. You can always stick the factory power windows in the base model but you can't always find a SE no sunroof. hahahhahhaha

Sorry about the name mixup, but thanks for the enlightenment and encouragement to buy the auto. I've already figured that it was going to be a long wait for a 5spd to show up which is making me want to buy the auto even more, only problem is that I live in vegas so if I wanted you to do the swap I'd have to do it when we're both available.
