Weird issue with my SR.... Lots of questions!
Hey guys,
Got a question for you. 2 days ago, my dipstick shot out and poured some oil in the engine bay on my S13 SR. It did that on a 1-2-3 up to 120km/h on 7psi and the stock T25. I tested the compression: 150 psi on all 4 cylinders. I checked the PCV valve, it seems to work properly. There is no oil in the blow-off valve or intercooler piping. When the blow-by occured, all gauges were reading nominal, except oil pressure that might be a tad too high. I recently intalled a catch can in between the Valve cover T and the intake. The hoses are a little smaller than the oem ones. Could that be it? Another thing I notice: Inside the black hose between the black box and the Valve cover T, there is a small brass "restrictor" that reduces the diameter of the opening to maybe a 3mm diameter circle: IS that supposed to be there? I also notice I might have put too much oil on the last oil change. I put maybe around 4.5L, which would be 0.8L too much. Would that cause the dipstick to fly out? Can I assume that my turbo seals are ok, since there is no oil in the BOV and it doesn't smoke? Can I assume my rings are ok because my compression yields very good results? I am thinking I might have had too much oil and it might've been the cause... What is your verdict?

so wait, wow, that's a lot of oil man....
for me, 4L of oil is already too much by quite a bit... but you are not getting any oil blow-by going thru any IC piping? I've heard of dipsticks flying out from too much oil, but that was a B18's, I would assume the same principal is true of the SR tho :/ U have pix of the restrictor? Drain some oil mang! ![]() |

Haha.. yea, how did you manage to put that much oil in? Are you still using the stock oil pan? That's a little more than an extra bottle/quart/liter too much.
Bump.. cause I'm experiencing the same thing. |

I dunno... I guess I was asleep when I did the oil change.
On the dispstick, it just showed a little over the line. I did not even do 1000km on that much oil... maybe 600km.

too much oil can cause that.
bad PCV valve is more likely to cause it but you said it's working fine, so I'm out of ideas if the correct amount of oil doesn't do it.

Any other opinions???
My local mechanic told me too much oil might do that, "for sure"... I am putting everything back up together tomorrow and how it goes... I hope I did not blow another engine...

Well, it still does it..
And I found out that when I take the oil cap off, some air is pressured out..

the same thing happened to me when i picked my car up after the swap. We went to the dyno and i had tons of blow by and finally on like the 2nd pull my dipstick shot out. We cleaned the PCV valve out with brake cleaner and it worked like a champ. I just went to Advanced the next day and got a 19mm PCV valve for like 4 bucks.

All right...
I took a new hose from the crank case to the T and another hose from the to an aftermarket catch, and a hose from the catch-can to the intake. I still have the crankcase compression. More information to add to this problem. After laying for 24hours, at cold, the compression test gave me 140+psi on all cylinders. I have a hard time to start the car, even after replacing the plugs. When the car start initially, it smokes a rich black cloud that smells unburnt gaz. I also noticed vaccum on the aftermarket catch-can on the hose that goes from the intake to the catch-can. Any more ideas?

on the drivers side of the vavle cover there is a t fitting that was causing my car to have way to much pressure, so i cut the hose off on the forward side and put a breather filter on it. Im not sure where that goes but it has something to do with pcv. i dont know shit about catch cans so i dont know if you are talking about that t fitting or if you need to run a hose from that.

Here is some more info to add...
I noticed my Overflow reservoir coolant level going down at a steady rate when pushing the car hard. I solve the "dipstick flying" with some electrical tape on the o-ring. The PCV valve has been replaced, the pcv system has been completely changed. I have NO OIL in the catch-can... Is my turbo going? Or is it the headgasket? Would the headgasket failing pressurize my crankcase? I am thinking it's the turbo now... BTW, I am going to leakdown test the engine on the 29th... I just am looking for some "explanations"...

Yeah, no coolant in the oil when I flushed it last week. I should check a second time though... and there is no oil in the coolant.
Can a BHG pressurize the crankcase?

I am leaning for the turbo going away...
bad seals can pressure the crankcase bad seals can burn some coolant But i don't feel any power losses...

I think its from your crankcase building pressure so, get rid of the stock catch can *black box on top side of turbo* and just run a heater hose from the T on the valve cover and into the crank case breather.

I found one leaky injector... that can explain my hard time to start up and the rough idle at times...
now, let's hope the leakdown will be positive so I can concentrate on RACING the car. ![]()

Replaced o-rings, starts like a charm...
Did a leakdown test, 0%-0%-5%-0% I am very happy with the results.. Seems nothing's wrong with the good ol'e SR20DET! ![]()

Must be the turbo that's going... anyways T25s are cheap.

Problem is back... Happened during a 20 minutes lapping session.
Bringing thread back to life... is there anyone in the world that can help me with this before I open up the engine? Symptom: Dipstick raises and squirts oil under VERY hard acceleration (higher rpms) at 7 psi on a T25 once the engine is warmed up. - Compression test result : 150+psi on all cylinders - Leakdown result: 0%-0%-5%-0% - No oil in the catch can - No oil in BOV - Not burning any oil - No smoking out of the turbo - Replaced PCV valve - Replaced PCV plumbing, took out factory black box. - No bubbling in rad - No milky oil or oily coolant - No overheating - Good oil pressure - Normal EGTs - Pulls hard, does not seem to have any power losses

it's having to release pressure through your dipstick tube. something is either plugged or clogged that allows pressure to escape from the crankcase.
