I pulled off the upper chain guide a few days ago, just took some picts just in case anyone wanted to know how it was done.

Dirty stock engine bay!

Pull off Valve cover.... its a bunch of 10mm bolts

Remove the Guide by taking out the 2 12mm bolts between cam towers.

Then since I had the Cover off I painted it... came out OK i guess

So basically, you dont even need to remove the timing cover to remove the upper guide? Cool.

I like your "blacktop" ka, haha.

I dont know about the SOHC, but I would think it would be some sort of a guide on the side of the chain?? Anyways, I just used some High Temp Spray paint, can find it at any auto parts store. And as far as the noise goes, I never really had a prob with the chain noise, I heard it maybe twice ever. so i figured what the hell and pulled it off. I have not heard the noise since then.

BadMojo - I think its cool that you took pic when doing this. It should help out a lot of people that have questions on it. I went through the same thing last week. I bent those damn little brackets that the injectors wire harness bolt to.
I have been asking around about the guide and getting different info on. Some say you dont need when others say you do. The people that its needed is cause I guess it is some kind of oil guide and with out it, it does not provide the right amount of oil to the back of the head.
Now dont quot me on this, cause this hear say. Im still in the process of trying to find a for sure answer.

The top guide that BadMojo showed is not needed. When I had the chain job done on my car, they did not re-install that particular upper guide. Nissan states that upper guide is not necessary.

Ahh, thank you so much for the pics bro!!

My engine has 130,000miles on it, and I'm starting to hear that rattle noise in cold weather or sometimes when i'm driving even. Since I have NO experience in this field, you think it's doable? I was so scared to do it myself till I saw those pics. It doesnt look hard at all (or is it?)

Now teach me how to take the spark plugs out (lol, yes thats how new I am) and I REALLY wanna do this myself!

XxDriverxX - I recomend you buy yourself the Factory Service Manual (FSM) before trying stuff. There are a lot of things that appear to be very simple, but have small intricacies about them that are not obvious. Such as torque, and order of removal.

However spark plugs just Are easy. get yourself a 16mm Spark Plug socket-will have a little rubber peice in it to protect the spark plug, a good ratchet, torque wrench(not necessary, but handy), a 3" extension, and a plug gapping tool. and pull them out. Just remember what order the plug wires were connected in. (change one plug at a time)
New plugs should be gapped to .039-.043.
The plug wires themselves will snap on and off with a Firm but gentle pull/push vertical to the engine.
The new plugs should be torqued down 14-22 ft lbs

Hey thanks guys. I figured it might help someone. Its a very simple job, anyone can do it really. Just remember not to tighten the valve cover bolts to much, they will strip! The head is Al so its nice and soft, be careful.... wouldnt wanna have to zip tie the valve cover back on

Yeah, the pictures are great, this should go in the installs section, even though it's an uninstall. Even though it's simple, it's a great resource.
