Lets talk laptops

Well, i've gotten pretty fed up with my brother just downloading crap on the PC we supposedly share. He's has no sense of the word ad ware or spy ware. There's so much crap on the computer right now, its not even funny. And he always complains to me when its not running right. I'm like dumbass, pay attention when you're downloading stuff then! Then he gets all butt hurt when i get pissed and threaten to kick his ass. ANYWAY, im tired of this BS. So i'm thinking of giving him this computer and getting myself a decent laptop. Let him screw his own stuff up. Only thing is, i dont really know what to look for in a decent laptop. I've been looking around around online and reading up on a few differnt ones, but every company seems to claim there's as being the best. Basically, i'd like to know what you guys would recommend as a decent laptop. It doesnt have to be super fancy, but not a POS one either. I take it i'll be spending $600 - $800 bucks for something like that right?

Sorry for the rant. Just sick of doing spy/adware scans. I've been doing them ALL day. Matter of fact i'm running another one right now.

Thanks for any help guys!

Just make sure you're gonna use the portability of a laptop. I have a laptop now and it doesn't move from my room. I could have gotten a nicer desktop for the same price.

Toshiba's make pretty good laptops for the price range you want.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....prd37800050005

$829.99 with like $200 in rebates, so around the $650 range.

I bought a laptop 4 months ago, and it has never left my room. I don't regret it though, as I have small space in my room for a desktop, the laptop is just fine. I can always take it anywhere I want, if I want to.

spend a couple hundred more and get a 12" Mac Powerbook
If you're a student, most school should offer a student discount....

if Macs dont appeal to you, then pick up a Toshiba or Sony laptop

Sony looks pretty...but are horrible. I have known many people, myself included, that they have slowly disintegrated on.

I would also stress try to get something LIGHT. Cheaper sub $1000 laptops usually end up weighing 7lbs+.

i have a slightly older (2003) Dell Inspiron 8500 with 17" monitor. I'm not a huge computer buff, but it does the trick for me. I'm also a design student and I can run pretty much ANY design program I need to. The portabliity is great too...even if it's 17".

I have a Sony VGN-S260...and it's been rock solid since the day I got it. Light (less than 4 lbs), compact and thin, 13.3 inch widescreen DVD/CD-R drive, great battery life and awesome capabilities. I check up and you can get one on Ebay for around $700 - $800

Manufacturer Brand has nothing to do with stuff in the computer world. Everything runs off standard components and internals.

The only thing that differentiates laptops is the design and style. And just like desktops it'll be obsolete in 2-3 years. Just make sure you know what you are buying.

I have dell 700m. for 800-850 shipped. Very portable yet decent speed 1.6ghz P M like 2.4ghz P4 speed. Got an extra 1GB of ram for 120ish from Crucial. Gonna put that in myself. Comes with dvdburner,8cell battery (5hours), 80GB hard drive all that goodies. Best bang for the bucks in my book. Only draw back is it uses an onboard video card. So no gaming for ya haha.

I gota I9300 the other week, no regrets, excellent deal and excellent product.

a bit more than your $600-800 range though.

For something like that i'd suggest e-machines or a business designed laptop.

ummm okaaay? I dont know where that came from, but whatever. I know basic stuff about computers and certain programs, but i dont trust myself enough to actually build one. I'll leave that up to the people that actually know what they're doing thank you.

Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it.

If you just want to use it for the portablity....I'd go with Sony or Dell. If you just want it because you think your bro will not touch it....I would build a desktop. It's not hard at all...just buy the parts and place them where they go. Going thru newegg.com I priced out a desktop with LCD monitor for around $617.
