![]() No, I dont mean the throw out bearing, I mean the PILOT BEARING thats on the end of the input shaft, on the engine side.
![]() The bronze ring is my new pilot bearing, I have no idea wut the bigger ring is. Also, the new ring looks like it should fit inside the bigger ring, but the old ring seems to be melted/dissolved all over the bigger ring. Note the top/back end of the bigger ring. It looks like it was 1 piece with the flywheel. BACKGROUND: I had a 1991 auto tranny, swapped by a "friend", and Im starting to think he might have used the auto flywheel and pocketed the used MT flywheel i gave him? Anything helps... car stil in air at frends house :/ ![]()

bearings[?] on the MT input shaft:
![]() ![]() Old bearing p[laced up to flywheel after it was pulled off: ![]() flwheel alone: ![]() AND strangely the new pilot bearing fits in the center of the flywheel slightly, need to clean off the scored metal/fragments... maybe i can just ignore the fact that I pulled the bigger bearing out, and hope it all works OK?!

Well the Bronze one goes into the crank inplace of the Auto's input bushing when you do the swap. The tool that did your swap left the Auto one in the crank and didn't install the pilot bearing.
I'm suprised you didn't have any problems with the input shaft not fitting or walking the clutch. But seeing that you have the tranny and clutch out looks like you have some problems. What are they? |

would that mean that you need a new flywheel? as in a manual transmission flywheel? if you need it, i have one that i just took out from when i did my clutch swap, probably needs resurfacing, but you can have it if ur in need, also i have M/T flywheel bolts, that you will probably need if he left in the auto, where as you would need the longer M/T bolts. let me know!

o hey, thnx, I got all the MT stuff... he used everything rite, cept the bearing apparently.
The problem was that every time I pressed the clutch, i would hear a zzzzzzzz grinding sound. AND sometimes after grinding, rite b4 i let my foot all the way off the clutch, it would even screech eerily. It used to grind only sometimes, directly after the swap, but not frequently enough to do anything about it. I bled and adjusted the clutch, but that was it until now. I drove a few thousand miles, and one nite I clutch kicked in 1st gear.... DONT DO THAT! heh... finally killed my pilot bearing, allowing the input shaft to move around, and grind/squeal. This was my first time ever doing such a big job. Previoulsy only done suspsnesion, bolt ons, etc. Id say this was among the hardest since the tranny is so wedged into the tunner and doesnt have much room. There is room for learning though... most ppl on these boards should be fine doing it I think.

it's not the AT flywheel, 'cuz you'd have a hell of a lot more problems. and yah, you still have the auto bearing.. the bigger one.. just throw it away and use the smaller bronze one

ok, to answer your questions, that fucked up ass bearing was the auto tranny "spacer" and your friend somehow couldnt remove it when doing your swap so he probably jammed a pilot bearing in there, or maybe not even use one at all!
the auto tranny spacer "big ring" is a biTch to get out, thats whats holding me back from completing my engine swap using the auto motor w. that pos auto spacer. how did u get it out/ well, since you have it out now, all you have to do is put in the pilot bearing (the gold one) into the little hole, push it in a little, and throw back all your other stuff. throw that auto spacer away. so anyways, how did u get the spacer out? |

haha you think taking out the tranny/swapping the clutch it bad, have fun putting it back in...
tip: put a jack on the front of the engine to angle it back ![]()

you get the bearing out by using a slide hammer/pilot bearing removal tool available for rent at most autopart stores..
otherwise.. drill down the sides (down the walls of the bearing) and collapse it with a hammer... and it'll come right out |
