I have heard little bits about this, but not enough to get a full picture.  Is this the system where the rear wheels turn with the front to turn with Higher speed?  What models does this come on and can you turn off/disable this?  Thank you,

Mike

It is Nissan's 4-wheel steering system.  Its where the rear wheel detects a hard corning situation at high speeds and turns the opposite direction of the front wheel kinda like this:
left turn:
normal:   _----/
hicas:    \----/

It is a system to allow you to get more stability and control in corners.  It was only available on 91-93 model hatchbacks.  It was in it's earlier form then and is not as refined as Nissan's newer hicas systems on the Skyline.  Many people feel it makes the car unpredictable around drifts, and high speed corners.  It is defeatable.  Can't remember how.  I believe there are some tie rods you canm connect to the control arms or something.  It's been a while since I looked into it.

Yeah, you can disable it. . but don't know why you'd wanna do that. . it's a pretty nice system, and from what I understand IS the same system used today.  There was HICAS, then HICAS II, then after that. . Super HICAS, which was used on the 240sx, 300zx, Skyline, J30, Q45, etc. .

The rear wheels turn in the opp. direction at low speeds, and while entering a corner, but at high speeds they turn in the same direction as the front for stable lane-changing.

I've never used it on the track, but on the street. . it's FAR from quirky, and drifting is a lot of fun with this system.

I want it on my S14!!  My car handles like ass compared to my S13 with HICAS. .

Oh . . also, it was available in coupe as well, but only in Canada.

From what I hear a lot of the 300zx guys that ae into Autox and racing don't like it and disable it.  I don't think I've ever actually heard that about the 240 though..  Guess I'll just have to drive one and see.
