sorry to bother you guys, i'm a newbie. i've got a black 97 se coming in january (i know, long time.) But i've done some research on engine choices and i've come down to three; turbo the existing ka, sr20det, or ??rb26dett??.
ka = good torque, supposedly able to be a killer with as little as 7 (half bar) boost. sr20det = easy swap with already installed turbo, runs behind a ka24de.t. though (bigger turbo upgrade, but that would cost more still). rb26dett = twin turbo set up <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() once again, sorry to bother you guys, but i want a reliable and quick s14, thanks guys <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() |

i don't mean to question you, considering you have way more experience/knowledge than me. but what about the power loss compared to the ka, and i heard you need to run around 1 bar of boost to get a good hp range, and then you would need a new fuel system and possibly a bigger turbo & intercooler? thanks for your help though <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='

There is someone on this list who is dropping an RB26DET (note the single "T") into an S14. I won't say who, though, since I don't want to let the cat out of the bag. KA is good can run up to about the same price as a SR swap, but ull run a T3/T4 [for some kits] which will put out more hp on same boost as SR 2. SR could run about the same as KA-T, smaller turbo, but there are Many kits out for the S13 SR for bigger turbo upgrade. 3. RB26DETT will not fit in ur car, u will have to take out one turbo somehow. it does not fit becuz it hits the steering column do more research. learn mroe about the car, the engine. wat how to do it. do a search here on zilvia.net about the RB ull see many post about it |

silviadriver, thanks for the info, yeah, i've been weeding through many posts on all three motors (lot of fu**!ng work so far), but definately well worth. I'm looking to get plans set early so i have a clear definition, but then again not get too far ahead of myself. Thanks to all who are providing their input/info/opinion.

You could get a custom manifold made to clear the steering column no? BTW (and I can't believe I don't know this) is the rb26dett sequential or 1 turbo per 3 cyl. I thinking it's the latter but I really don't know.

Seeing as most cars that have I-6's are GT class, wiegh in around 3500 pounds. S14 is around 2800 I think, its been a while since Ive read specifications on it. For example supras and skylines, they are meant to go at fast speeds, so they have big engines and are designed to be heavy. What makes them heavey is mainly the re-enforcements to the chassis, and the honkin' engine. A supra could possibly do what a Silvia/180 could do on a track, but it would most likely never in its power band enough to do any good, and the momentum would make tight cornering a pain. In essence, the RB isnt meant to go in an S chassis, its not the type of engine that its meant to be on a chassis meant for the twisties. If youre trying to get a car that can whoop ass on a highway, you should just get something like a 300ZX or Supra, but if its just for shits what the hell. i've talked to a certain someone who is doing an engine swap of the equivalent weight of the rb26dett ( minus 15 lbs) in his s14, and the engine actually doesn't weigh it down nearly as much as many would think. of course with more junk in the front you are gonna have a little bit of understeer and more push/momentum under cornering/breaking, but if calibrated nicely, overcomable and even welcomed by the exit speed capability. and yeah, 2800 lbs is the weight. and of course, better suspension is always good, bar none.
on a sidenote, which engine is better (opinion wise), red top or black top? s13 sr20det, s14 sr20det, or s15 sr20det thnx |

Im just saying, most of the cars with I-6's are meant for high speeds, and need to be solid as a rock at 160. Typically S14 or S15 engines would be in better condition, but there isnt much different other than the turbo. I think the Oil pan size is bigger on a S15 or something though. Kerrigan |

I don't think there is to much of a difference, I forget where I read it, but it wasn't a big difference, but I might be thinking of a different engine.

If thats the case (I think difference between RB and SR would be about 130ishlbs) then weight distribution isnt as big as a deal as everyone makes it out to be.

i live in nz thefore have a rhd silvia s14, (no turbo issures) im about to do this convirsion using a rb crossmember a rb30 3L block and rb26 head, whats the weight roughly of both engines sr20 vs rb26 /25
because i have no sr20 as car was shell only its an ideal conversion, sr20 motors here in nz are more expensive than most rb's and i have lots of rb motors so it was a ideal conversion for a drift car,& possible circut one day, i would like to make it 50/50 weight eventually, but i think thats going to be hard, |
