I have noticed that three of my exhaust manifold studs (or bolts) have broken. Now at least I know why it sounds like there is an exhaust leak under the hood. I am wondering if anybody has had this happen to their car and what is required to fix it. thanks.

Well I have found 2 broken studs on my exaust manifold also and I see there are no replys to this post. Is this a really bad thing like I've been told (chance of head removal, etc.) or might they come out easy? Help Please!

First off, you have to figure out how the studs are affixed to the manifold. If they're actually screwed in, then you could get a broken stud removal tool and get them out that way.
I think they're part of the manifold or at least secured in a way that they weren't meant to be taken out. Anyway, contact the local dealership to see what they do when that happens. Or call up a machine shop. They'd be able to tell you too.

i had to this on my old 84 trans am. one of the only options you have is to get an "esay out" . its not an easy or fun task by any means mind you. but if youve got the free time, make indentions in the back of the brokken bolts. Make them big enough to get the tip of the "easy out" in. after the stick the easy out in and whne you turn it counter clock wise the easy out digs into the bolt while at the same time trying to unscrew it. hope that helps you some.
just my 2 cents

I just pulled studs out of four heada a few hours ago. They thread right out with a stud extractor, or if it's damaged badly you can vicegrip it. To the guy who said they're not meant to be taken out, how did they get them in? Think about it sparky.

yes the studs screw into the head, they are not part of the casting.

ARP sells strengthened studs for the manifold with 12-pt nuts for easy removal.
Also, consider adding a "flex pipe" somewhere after the exhaust.. between that and the ARP studs, I wouldnt expect it to break ever again. It seems to be a common problem, particularly on SR20s... |
