Custom 4 point cage installed..

Well, about 3 months ago I bought a 240 for the purpose of being my track/autox/weekend fun car. I wanted a car that I could pay off quickly, and I could afford to wreck (seriously). I was too scared to drive my RSX on the track because I was afraid of wrecking it after my first track day. I was hesitant to go to the limit, because if I made a mistake it could have meant the end of my car or even life. Therefore, the 240 was only natural.

I plan on doing a bunch of track days in '06, so a roll cage was certainly neccesary from a safety standpoint. I immediately began researching my options. The only thing I could find was bolt-in cages that looked poorly designed. I knew I needed something a little more confidence inspiring. I found through my research that a custom cage would probably be the best option. I could get it designed exactly how I wanted, and I could get one welded in. I only wanted a 4 point weld-in in the rear with a diagonal bar, and a harness bar. I also wanted a cage that was SCCA legal, and something I could build off of in the future if I decide to build the car for SCCA Club Racing.

I began my search for a company that could build me a cage. My friend Russ told me about a company he uses called MRC Manufacturing located in Lawrenceville. I called them up and went up there to have them look at the car. Mike checked it out and we talked about what I wanted, etc. About a month and a half later, I took the car up there to get the cage installed. I went to pick it up about 3 weeks ago, and i'm very impressed with how it turned out! The cage is exactly what I wanted and is beautiful. They did a great job, and I will certainly use them again in the future. If you need a cage they are the guys to use. If you want their contact information let me know.

I thought the car was loose before. Now it's REALLY loose. Half throttle around a corner in the dry will get you into a nice power slide. I guess its time to install my LSD, and new rims with tires!

Anyways, here are the pictures......

it's pretty loose right now, but I also have subframe spacers.

I have yet to install my buddy club suspension, new wheels with tires, and LSD. I've got wider tires for the rear also, so that should help make the car more neutral. The main factor in the massive oversteer right now is crappy all-season tires.

I think your fears of the track were a little exagerated.

I'm afraid it may be the opposite. It is something of a rarity to have a car roll when it leaves the track. I've been off the track backwards and sideways many a time without any worry. I've seen many people come off the track at various angles with no worries. I've even seen a SC300 go over a curb, break a wheel and tire off, slide across the track, and into the dirt without rolling.

Do rolls happen? Yes. Does they happen often? No. Is rolling preventable? Yes.

By the way, what MRC built for you is a roll bar, as it does not go forward of the B pillar. A four-point roll cage would have uprights at the B-pillar and directly below the A-pillar.

Well, i have a lot different experience than you. I've seen quite a few car roll overs at track days, and SCCA club races. I've been off the track before as well, and seen how quickly it happens. Accidents do happen, and they can happen faster than you can react. I'd rather play it safe than sorry, and still be alive. $425 is a small price to pay to help save my life and a passenger's.

I'm aware that I don't have a roll "cage". I know its only a "bar". Your arguing about semantics.

maybe you could use some experience in life

you are planning to push WAYYYY too hard if you plan on taking your car off the track on day one. It could happen, but that fear motivates you to keep your car maintained, and 4 wheels reasonably close to pavement.

why are you bashing me for getting a roll bar in my car?

I'm not planning on wrecking my car. Who does?

I'm not saying I'm going to go ape nuts on the track. I want to be able to push my car to the limit safely. I don't want to imagine all the possible bad scenarios that could happen without a roll bar. I also want to run a harness, so I needed a bar to protect my head in a roll over.

I also will have my car paid off, so I can "afford" to wreck it. Taking a car on the track that you are still making payments on is stupid. I've seen quite a few people wreck their daily drivers. Trying explaining that to the insurance company.

You do realize their located in Atlanta GA right?

I didn't get a full harness bar because of design issues with the seat. I wanted to be able to put the seat all the way back on the sliders. The car might eventually become a ITS car, so theres no need for a full harness bar.

I'm not bashing you for getting the cage, thats great. Its just the "I needed a caged car to go on the track" thing that I said is a bit exagerated... a lot of new comers interested in track time might be deterred if they come to this thread and think that they aren't worried enough.

Yeah, I agree. I just plan on doing a large amount of track time over the next year, and years to come. A roll bar was only natural to help protect me in the event of a accident.
