an interesting side mount setup....
so i was wondering.... is it possible to have a TWIN sidemount setup?? intercooler on each side and a 2.75" pipe running through the middle connecting them, could it work?

hmm didnt 300zx twin turbos have two sidemounts...but thats a totally different setup, i can see where u get the logic from. i dont know why it would be a "bad" setup, given u have the fabrication ability.
[edit] yes, the extra volume of air to fill up will be detrimental to throttle response. Last edited by AutoKA24DE; 12-27-2005 at 11:32 AM.. |

it'd only be 'bad' in that you're adding alot of restriction and fucking up your flow. That'll lead to bad throttle/boost lag.
In theory it'll be pretty efficient, but at a cost of responsiveness. You'd be better off welding those two sidemount cores together and creating a custom FMIC.

hmm this reminds me of a very unique setup I saw a long time ago. An early or mid 1990s hyundai elantra hb with a 4g63t swap, and he cut a whole in the hood and mounted two SMIC from a 1g dsm in line right before the TB,pretty nifty

Z32 had twin sidemounts, they also had twin turbo, and two sides so it wasn't any extra piping.

not turbo lag, per se.. Your turbo make spool and make boost quick as can be, but your throttle response will suck.
Basically it's more like power lag. You can floor it, but you won't feel full boost for a second or two.

its like having to inflate two baloons instead of one before you get power.

oh... that doesnt seem too bad.... so i can run 12psi on a stock t25 for a while without worrying to get a fmic.... hence one side mount can only handle 9psi daily.... 9 X 2 = 18!! yay

well....you would also get twice the pressure drop, the factory side mount will drop1 psi at 9 pounds, having two you would most likely drop at least another half poundalso the LAG would indead be increased do to the increased amount of air that needs to be compressed

Some guys here who can't afford a FMIC swap the sidemount off of 1JZ Toyotas (Mark 2, Cresta, Chaser, Supra) as it's almost twice as thick & can be had at the junkards for cheap. I realize that doesn't help you much in the US though...

s15 side mounts are quite larger as well and MrCrystalMeph did a write up on one not to long ago. The work required to do a twin sidemount set up would probably make me want to hit you if I saw it in person.

Ok if cost is the main factor why not go with a junk yard front mount? IE Ford diesel truck intercooler or even Volvo. The new Sport Compact Car mag has an s14 with a modified Isuzu intercooler on it. Like Mrmephistopeles said weld two together to make one FMIC
