well, i took the head off of my s13 sr20. while taking out the cams i had the chain suspended from the ceiling by fishing line. well when it came time to remove the head i snipped the line and the chain fell. it didn't fall into the front cover , just between the 2 guides. i promptly pulled it back out and i don't believe it skipped any links. is there any way i can be sure? i would really like to avoid taking off the front cover...
