wastegate vs. boost controller
debating what I should do about boost on my S14 SR...
should i go ebc and have adjustability or should i go wastegate 14 psi HKS and just have it set for 12-13psi...i'm not going to be needing 'on the fly' changes with boost and not really happy with pushing the stock actuator... i'm not going to be changing the turbo but who knows in the future... anyone have pics of their hks/other wastegate setup with stock T28?? suggestions?? thanks

Im running the HKS and am really impressed. The only crappy thing is if you adjust to much boost,or to little, you then have to wait about an hour for the turbo to cool so you can touch the damn actuator. Plus the price is pretty hard to beat compared to an EBC.

Go to www.howstuffworks.com and look up wastegate and boost controller.
wastegate is on the exhaust manifold and opens the dump tube once the spring is under enough pressure(boost) to open to prevent more boost from building and passing through the turbine. a boost controller can add to the pressure required to open the dump tube A boost controller allows you to run more boost than the wastegate spring would allow. Wastegate is required, boost controller is not.

I say go with a manual boost controller if your on a budget. |

By no means am I saying it is incorrect to do it in the way you suggested but I consider it fully proper to control it with both electronic boost controller and a stiffer sprung actuator to allow the boost controller proper control.

i'm probably going to go with the HKS actuator that's made for the S14 T28.
considering it's rated around 14psi max if i set it alittle below it'll be safe even with a little boost spike...then if i'm having problems with climate variability, spring stiffness, spikes i'll control it with an ebc. why do people stick with the stock actuators and push 14psi....because it's cheaper?

EBC. You will find that when your gate is set at 14psi it will actually begine to open at around 10psi or less because it is in fact just a spring and in gradually compresses. The EBC hold all pressure off the spring until your desired boost level is reached then it sends the air to the spring allowing it to operate. The EBC will give you a LOT better boost response.

I've been running HKS actuator for s13 for over 1 year at 14psi with no controller. Of course I'm running a $45 vac/boost guage -LOL. Went from 90 degrees to 30 degrees outside temp, and have had no issues. Boost rises fast as hell, then holds steady at 14psi right to redline. I'm considering something more adjustable from the inside, but I'm not paying big $$ for it - seeing how my HKS unit work just fine. My $.02.

yeah, it still rises quickly but running an open dump you can hear the gate open early. ex. I am running 10psi, I can actually hear it start dumping at about 4-5psi. It still rises quickly but to feel the rush when you step on it and it pegs the boost guage to your setting is AWSOME!

so from what im reading, EBC you have your EXACT (x) boost without any loss due to "early spring compression on the gate".... this sounds like someone who drives their car and says "yea that feels like 200 wheel hp"
i think the best way to get the best possible answer is if someone would kindly run a HKS gate and then an EBC and dyno both to see acurate hp readings, if its constant boost all the way with a HKS gate or early spring compression, giving less hp at lower rpms |

nothing is exact. you can still get boost spikes. I had less spikes with just my actuator on my stock T25 than with my EVC EZ II... but my EVC is also only running in closed loop mode... meaning it's like a gain adjustment. and not as precise as an open loop unit. which is one reason I want to add the display unit and all the functions of the full EVC. either way works and works well.
