running rich, but spark plugs show lean?

Hey guys a buddy of mine has a sr20det with a full rebuild, cp pistons, eagle rods, 270 cams, greddy intake mani , peakboost exhaust mani, 1000cc injectors, gt3071r, and an AEM EMS. We got it running a few days ago on a map he had tuned for a slightly different setup, but we retarded timing a couple degrees and richened the fuel up about 10%. The ems is setup for the injectors he is using. At idle the wideband shows 11-12 afr, rich I know, at WOT it shows 11, cruising about 12-13 and and at idle you can smell the gas coming out of the exhaust pipe (no cat). But after a run on the freeway we pull the plugs and by the looks of them it seems like the car is running lean. The first is white and they get darker as the move to the fourth. I was really confused when we investigated. Could it be the wideband isnt working properly and showing its running rich? I believe the plugs more than the wideband. i looked around but nothing really answered my question... Here is a pic my buddy posted on another forum you can see how the plugs look.
