Explain distributor timing to me!!

so my coil is fucked so I bought a new distributor to take care of the problem (coil is built in). So I took teh old distributor off and installed the new in. I then proceeded to start the car but it wouldn't start! So my buddy at work told me to turn the rotor a little bit at a time till the car would start. I know this might sound stupid but what exactly does turning the rotor do? how does that affect the timing? I'm sorry if that sounds newbish but for some reason its not clicking. thanks in advance

PS --> I finally did get the car to start but the timing is way off. It's at like 5 degrees BTDC

When you turn the distributor you mess with the timing. Towards the headlight for retarding and towards the windshield for advance.

I'm asking about turning the rotor and gear, not the distributor.

should've marked how it was aligned when you took it out and put the new one in with the same orientation

now that you got the car started, its simply a matter of timing it by turning the distributor and using a timing gun. if you run out of room to turn it, that means you are a tooth off.
