Help Identifying turbo
Hi guys, I bought a turbo recently for my KA-T build. It was advertised as a stock t-25 but I don't think it is. It says Garret m-24 on the side and ar. 80 Anyone know what turbo this is? Here is a pic:
![]() Also, I was wondering if the turbo is bad because when I try to spin the compressor, it won't spin easily. I have to try hard to spin it. I don't know much about turbo's. Does this mean the turbo is dead, or will it spin fine when hooked up to the oil lines and installed on the car, or should it spin easier in one direction than the other?, any help would be appreciated. I was always under the impression that you should be able to easily spin the turbo with your hand. Thanks Alex. |

that's one clean ass used turbo...
i'll go home and check mine since it's out and ready for sale, but mine spins freely, both ways, no shaft play, you shouldn't have to be struggling to spin it, yours is possible busted, but it's journal bearing, it's rebuildable, probably 100-150ish??? not sure... |

I had one of those on my old SR20, I think it was a t25. Never got a definitive answer out of anyone here when I posted mine. I'll tell you that with an intercooler and 3" downpipe back I made 250rwhp/275rwt at 10psi and a 3* retard in timing. With a turbo elbow, 3" straight pipe, tune, 12psi, and correct timing I was making over 300 at the wheels.

So it's basically busted if it won't spin freely? Someone was telling me that it might just be gummy oil build up and that the most important thing to look for is no shaft play. I don't know if they are right though.

yes, thats a stock s13 redtop turbo, and yes, it's bad that it doesnt spin freely. It's true that it could be buildup in there - you can try spraying some degreaser in the oil holes and through the blades and spinning it by hand for a while, but theres no guarantee that the turbo's not toast.
