Engine wants to die when braking

When coming off load and braking the engine seems like it wants to die. The rpms will fall below idle speed to about 450-500 RPM and hover there for a minute and then slowly come back up to the normal 750 RPM. It only happens when decelerating ( I tried hitting the brakes from a stand still and it had no effect) The car runs strong otherwise. I have cleaned the battery terminals for good measure and the plugs and wires are only 4 months old. Any ideas?

Thanks

Ryan

I had a similar problem when my brake booster broke. Check and see if you have a leak in you brake booster vacuum line. Also check to see if you have any other vacuum leaks.

sorry couldn't be more help, but good luck.

Is this when you're decelerating only? Or only with the clutch down?

I have the same problem. Sometimes it stalls when I'm braking.

Put the car in neutral and rev it up and see if it does the same thing. If it doesn't, then it seems like it would be a vacuum problem.

same thing happened to me last month, exactly the same thing.

CHANGE YOUR FUEL FILTER

I did that and the problem was gone the next time I drove

there are about a billion different possibilities, and this is a very common problem.

There is some stuff in the FAQ about it. And lots in the search.

some causes:
bad grounding
Dirty IACV
Dirty EGR
Dirty AIV
MAF's going bad
leaking injectors, or bad o-rings
Dirty Fuel Filter
Old Ignition system componants
Bad o2 sensor.

Many of these will come with other symptoms, but most the time I see this happening b/c the AIV or IACV are old and crusty, and the little seals are getting old.

yup, see this all the time on SRs - most of the time, the people have their BOV's venting to atmosphere, and think that's the cause - it's usually not!

All the things chimp listed above are great things to check, as are the FAQs and any search topics you can find. My S13 does it too, but I know it's a vacuum problem (brake booster line is cracking), and it doesn't actually stall the car, so I'm alright with it for now. Check the search topics for additional symptoms for each part and narrow it down.

Also, it helps a ton if you list the engine and any mods when you post a problem like this... just an FYI.
