sorry if you are gonna get mad cause i don't have anything really interesting to say, but you don't have a seperate forum for new people, thought i would introduce myself here.  anyway, my name is Scott, i am a 20 year old freshman at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (near Pittsburg).  i am originally from the Philadelphia area.  i am looking to work all this coming summer and buy a find a 240sx from around the year 91 with a junk engine, cause i plan on putting in the sr20det engine. i have a 91 mazda mx-6, and i need something with some real power.  do you think that i can get the 240 i am looking for for less the $2000?  obviously miles and all of that doesn't really matter, and i know the engine i want for the swap won't be cheap, but just wondered what you think.  if you have any questions, then please let me know.  and if any of you are from the Indiana, PA area, then let me know, cause i would like a closer look at these cars.  have a good day.
Scott

Welcome to the boards!

To answer the $2000 question.... it'll get you at least the car.  As for the car and the engine.... my guesstimate: start at a good $4000 - $5000 with bare necessities and a DIY swap.

I figure you can get a 240sx in running condition for $1000, the engine for $2000, and pray to god that $1000 will let you get by with the odds and ends.... keeping that last $1000 for "just in case" expenses for when anything and everything goes wrong.
Of course, I'm not an SR expert by any means.... but I'm sure someone around here can break it down further.

thanks for replying, even though you may not be an sr expert, i'm sure you know a lot more then i do.  like i said, i probably won't be out to get this car till probably the end of the summer, so i am just hoping i can compile a lot of information on the 240sx and the available engine for it so i can make sure i do this project right.  in the end, i am hoping that the total project will cost somewhere around $10,000 for everything i plan on doing.  and since i am in school i think it will probably take me a year to finish.  that's okay though because i probably won't be able to afford the insurance on the car.  i'm paying $240 a month right now, and my car FWD and a 4 cylinder.  so i'm sure that the 240sx will cost me a good amount more.
