Long story short, I need a car and I came across this '89 240SX Coupe. It's essentially the exact same one I have over in there (I'm in PR for those who don't know), and therefore it'd be convenient since I could have my brother send me parts since people here charge barbaric prices.

Right now it's not running, and when I went to see it, the engine wouldn't turn on. Supposedly, it had been turning on prior to today, but it's nothing I can testify to. Seems he was doing some work on it so it has some cut wires and he took out the A/C. The rear tires were blown out and rather screwed up as well. All in all, this guy obviously bought the car to just screw around with since it was in less-than-appealing conditions, and his '97 Maxima was in tip-top shape...
It has it's share of cosmetic issues, but as far as I could tell, the electric components work (minus the sunroof, which seems to be stuck).
And most importantly, when the engine did run, it wouldn't go past 1,000rpms. It would only stutter and stumble, sometimes even shut off. Idling and turning on were not an issue. He says it sounds like air is leaking from the intake before it reaches the manifold.

So... He wants $750 for the car, but is it really worth that much?

tell the owner that it's not working, it's like buying a shell, it's going to take alot of money to fix, and then offer what salvage yards would pay, start low, pretend you're a super broke ass high school student in raggity ghetto wear and give the owner a really sad face, like MF said, 500 tops

Doesn't seem worth it to me either. That interior looks like a nightmare, unless you're going to gut it.

I paid $1000 for my coupe... It ran, the outside was a lil rough, some good scrapes, and missing fender extentions, but the interior was in near immaculate condition for a car thats what 18 years old... I wouldn't give 750 for it.

It's rather difficult to find one here reasonably priced that's running. And since I only have a grand, it makes it that much more difficult.

Yup... That'll come eventually, plus I can have certain parts sent over from my '89 coupe in CT.

240's here in PR are difficult to come by at a decent price. Not to mention that coupes are even more difficult. And as I mentioned, I have the same car in CT in case I were in need of some parts since I have no other use for it. I'm going to give the guy less than a week to get the engine running again, but if he doesn't I'm definitely going to pass it up.

i think that is a headache ....by the time and you complete the restoration, you could have buy one with better condition with same money.

Unfortunately, I only have a grand, so this is as good as it gets for me in terms of a 240 (which I would really like to continue with).

I wouldn't spend more than $400. You're buy a shell. Its going to cost you a bunch of money to get it fixed. Depending on what's wrong with it.

Yea. So far, from what I was told, the only real problem is that as soon as it reaches 1,000 revs, the engine starts to show signs of struggle. He told me it starts bucking and stalling, and that it sounds like the intake is letting the air out somewhere before it reaches the engine.

That's why I want to see if he can get it running, since it'll be easier to see and describe the problem, rather than go by his word.

I say pass. Its going to take awhole lot more than the $250 you're going to end up with to get that pile on the road. Keep saving for a better 240sx. If you cant wait that long, then another 240 may not be the one for you.

I've come to realize that. I'm a dreamer, so I always look at the cars I consider for what I can make of it, not just what it is.

But, yeah. I'll probably get over it in a week if there's no progress.

I don't know. it's really up to you. If you have confidence that you could get it running then I'd do it. Just a food for though, I bought my 240 for $500 before the 240 craze came about. Because of the demand, $750 for a complete non running car might not be too bad.

They are, but since they're so popular people tend to overcharge big time just like with any other car. And anything else is usually too far away.

But believe me, the thought has crossed my mind.

That's actually the best choice of words. The biggest problem here is that they exaggerate the craze. In fact, there's a surplus of rice, and I'm not talking about food....

So wait your in PR and this car is in PR? How often do you find S-chassis out there? I think it all depends on location, I dont imagine finding alot of S-chassis in Puerto Rico, I'd jump on it for $750, anything lower would be better but $750 still isnt exactly highway robbery for your situation...$10k for a stock kouki S14, now thats beyond robbery...

It's not easy, but it ain't hard. It's just a matter of finding good ones, or even decent ones. Others are just used, abused, and abandoned.

I know... I know......

It's just been extremely hard holding out for anything else with barely anything. But either way, like I said, in a week, it's all or nothing.
