safe psi level?
Is it safe to run an sr20det redtop stock internals w/Garrett GT28R dual ball bearing turbo to 17psi? If not what is the max boost a stock redtop can handle?

You could run 17 psi but not on a daily type of thing. I've read and heard stories running psi higher than that on a stock bottom end. I wouldnt advise it though. The max boost depends alot on the tune you have on your sr. I think its somewhere around 13-14 psi as far as safe boosts goes. Someone correct me if I am wrong

your headgasket is going to blow before anything, and with higher boost, it's likely that you could lift your head. get yourself a metal headgasket (apexi, greddy, i would say cometic but a few others have bad expriences on here, i personally have apexi) and arp head studs. it will be a cheaper investment, beacuse if you do blow your gasket or lift your head, you could possibly damage other things. the metal HG and head studs will give you peace of mind ![]() |

17 psi on a GT28 with stock internals and proper supporting mods puts you in the 300-320 hp range........you should be FINE like this
Especially if the car has already been properly tuned.......but before you go upping the boost, you should have the car retuned by someone that knows what they are doing. Most people on here with experience say stock headgasket is fine for awhile (up to 350+ (?)), but to replace it when you can if you have the head off.

Where do people get these ideas from? There are plenty of people running GT28 turbos at that boost level/power level with stock motors..... Assuming you have supporting mods (injectors, good FMIC, etc) and a good tune, I really don't see where the problem is

I was tuned by Jeff Evans in PA, who is one of the most well known tuners in the country, and am getting ready to add a Greddy IM, which should bump me up into the 350-360 whp territory or so.
I asked him about the HG, and he said he's "tuned plenty of SRs with stock HG and that much power that are just fine" Granted, if you constantly run the car hard and beat on it, it probably won't hold forever......

No you are ABSOLUTELY correct, if I was buying a car like that, I would be worried too.
I guess I feel safer with my own car, since I know exactly how it's been treated the whole time......

good point gabe14. lol. yeah, this vehicle is tuned with the right mods and vital monitoring system. it has a wide band that is intergrated with the greddy e-01 boost controller. just doing my research. thanks for all the input.
