Angry Threw a bearing?

Hey guys, yeah, I'm bloody stuck again.

Driving home in 5th gear, just cruising along for a couple hours. Then all of a sudden, 5th spits out the shifter and revs high. I try and shift it back in. It won't go. I come to a stop on the shoulder. I can't shift into any gears. Now I have this VERY healthy loud rattle and it stops whenever a push in the clutch.

Any ideas?

Friend says the throw bearing thats in the transaxle. This make sense?

it's not the throwout bearing in the clutch assembly. The 240 doesn't really have what most people would call a transaxle since it's a longitudinal RWD engine setup. I'm only mentioning this since I'm not sure if you are talking about the throwout bearing that holds the pressure plate away from the clutch or not. However, your symptoms do not show that the throwout bearing is bad. I think that something inside the transmission is bad, it may be a bearing, syncros, gears themselves or something else, hard to say. Do any of the other gears work? If so, then it is 5th that is bad, or which ever other gears don't work. If the throwout bearing was bad, the car would make noise with the clutch in, but not out. It doesn't do anything at all when the clutch is out.

I have a somewhat similar problem on my Sentra, and like u said, when I press down the clutch the rattling goes away. The dealership said it was the bearing in the clutch.

What does it take to drop a tranny?

Unfortunately due to living in a frikken cold climate (-20 to -30 on the average), and the amount of snow on the ground (over 2 ft), I really can't do the work this time around. I'll have to have a garage look at it, and take it up the rear

But for future knowledge, what do I need to do work like that? Is it complex?
