![]() I was trying to remove the "front cover" on my S13 SR20 today, and noticed that two of the bolts that hold the cover on are only accessible under the valve cover.
One of those two bolts is directly under the CAS gear on the exhaust cam. In order to get to it, you need to remove the exhaust cam. My question is... Where is the timing chain tensioner, and how do I remove the timing chain properly? I figure I have to remove the chain before the cam... Any suggestions? --Luke

The "front cover" is the cover that is attached to front (timing chain side) outside of the block. It is behind the pulleys. Mine is leaking oil, and I need to reseal it.
I don't understand your directions. There is only one timing chain. You said "chains"... How do I re-install the timing chain once it is removed?

You dont need to remove the exhaust cam. Just remove the CAS and use a "angle" attachment on your socket and it will be ok. I have done it several times. There are also 2 bolts you will have to remove from underneath. Remove the oil pan and they are right in the front.

Actually, I realized that I didn't need to remove the exhaust cam gear after I went ahead and tried to remove the exhaust cam gear. Now it's stuck half on and half off. I figured the best course of action for me to take would be to remove the tention on the timing chain, and replace the cam gear. Now I need to find out how to do that. Thanks, though. --Luke

OK if you need to remove tension on the timing chain then look on the passenger side of the engine about 3/4 of the way up. You will see a oval plate with two nuts on it. That is the tensioner, remove that and your chain will be slack. I would recommend setting everything to TDC first. Also if you are removing your cam be sure to remove the bolts as per the repair manual or you may damage it or the head. I am at work and working from the top of my head so I dont have that pattern handy but if you need it I could get it for you.
