2 catalytic converter + sr20
After noticing that all too many cars are starting to come turbocharged factory direct, I was trying to figure out why the SR wouldn't pass emissions. What I found was that the WRX has 2 catalytic converters so , Hypothetically speaking, if you put to catalytic converters on a SR do you think it would pass emissions? One more thing, Does restricting the exhaust air flow cause the turbo to become damaged over time? Or, does it just make it so you loose performance?

The reason is and always has been marketing... dat's it and dat's all. The SR doesn't pass emissions because Nissan never bothered to do the paperwork to sell it here. That's all that matters - labeling, testing, documentation.
In the days the SR was in production we had 4G63s and 3S-GTEs coming in US-market cars with a single cat and only basic emissions controls. If Nissan wanted to sell it, they could... they even had a special even-lower-emissions, lower-octane-fuel export version of the SR20DET cooked up, that they of course used in Europe in the S14. The WRX and Lancer Evolution need more extensive measures because the standards worldwide have gotten much stricter since then. The WRX's second cat specifically is mounted BEFORE the turbo, for fast lightoff and reduced cold start emissions. Backpressure doesn't damage the turbo. Just restricts it. |

Jeez, I knew this would probably happen. I didn't ask why Nissan didn't sell the SR in the states I was just asking if HYPOTHETICALLY speaking, would 2 cats on the SR pass the sniffer. And yes I know it won't pass visual.

the 3SGTE MR2's (91-95) came with 2 catalitic converters. One huge one right off the turbo and a dinky one before the muffler. The weird thing is that it will pass emissions with out the secondary muffler. There are people that have passed their MR2's without any cats at all (with the help of Super AFC or EMS)

You can pass a sniffer test with NO CATS let alone 1. 2 would just be stupid.
The reason some new cars have more is because new cars have to go through a cold startup emissions test in order to get EPA certification. Because the turbo is in the way turbo cars take longer to heat up the cats, and manufacturers have to use some trickery to improve the cold startup emissions. But when you go to the sniffer test if your 1 cat is already warmed up it would be fine. |

How bout not having a car and just getting arround by riding a bike or something? No?
Probably because the effect on the evironment is inconsiquential as long as you have a good running car with one cat. |
