so i get done swapping in my new 1.01 head gasket, put the timing chain back on the cams put the vc back on and give the engine a "spin" with my hands to make sure everything is good. the problem is that when i did this the chain "skipped" some teeth on the gear. i know this for a fact. i have to go back in and put the chain back onto the correct spot on the teeth right?

sr20 engine

amd the engine still spins by hand freely, (by hand) the pistons dont touch the valves.

You are correct I have had this happen before when i changed my chain tensioner. The only sure fire way to get it all back to where it needs to be is to just reinstall the timing chain.

that would be awesome but i dont have a pulley puller and cant get the pulley off to pull the cover. plus i REALLY dont want to take my head BACK off. any other ideas?

just retime the whole thing if your not sure, dont wanna smash into a valve, its not that hard really, tdc, set the cams, install the chain time thedizzz, i just did it to mine while i did my head gasket

you dont have to do that, just put it on tdc and use the link counting method. http://www.rs-enthalpy.com/tuning/sr-cam-alignment.doc

The only sure fire way to get it all back to where it needs to be is to just reinstall the timing chain.
