Do you have to press your clutch to start the car?

Hey

Car is a 93 240SX

I was driving my dads civic (woo hoo.)
and im used to holding the key to start but then pressing tha clutch pedal to actually fire up the engine (ie it has a sensor)

well the other day I tried it on my car. Never had before, although I owned it for like a year. My buddies gettin in the other side as i turn the key, no clutch, in first gear with no e-brake on.....

ended up dragging him almost 15 feet before i realized what was happening. Wierd thing is that there seems to be a sensor if I look at the clutch pedal.
