SR S14 SR Fail Safe mode clarifications

I have an S14 SR that I can't get running with my e-manage. No matter how I tune the e-manage it does not seem to make a difference to the ECU, leading me to suspect it may be in some sort of fail-safe mode. It's easy enough to know if it's in fail-safe mode..all I have to do is watch for the flashes on the back after I reset it, correct?

Exactly what will throw the CPU into this mode? When the internal circuitry is broken? Or when one of the 5 important sensors are unplugged/broken (lessee, MAFS, knock, oxygen, TPS, water temp..)?

But..what happens once it is in fail-safe mode? Does it rely on internal maps and disregard all inputs? Or depending on which sensors have failed, it'll only disregard that one? I.e. if my TPS is gone, but the MAFS works, it'll work off the MAFS.

I know for certain my ECU is getting the e-manage updated air flow signal. It just doesn't seem to want to use it..
