perhaps your shift solenoid is sticking. it's located on the drivers side fender well, says unisia jecs on it and it's got two bolts holding it down.
small plug. may wanna check that out. maybe be able to find another one from someone else who's done a five speed swap. May not be the problem but could be a part of it.

Does your car move forward? If your tranny stays in first gear then most likely problem with the valve body. I have a good auto tranny lying around, let me know if you want it. It's in Reseda at my shop. Send Pm.

I had to get mine rebuilt, wouldn't go past 50-55mph range. Just slipped. After driving the car for a while take the tranny dipstick out and smell the fluid at the end see if it smells like its burning. Its located behind the intake manifold in front of the fire wall. I know mine you could smell it. If you can drive 5 spd probably best option is 5spd swap..cause rebuild costs.

Only thing I can say for the time being get pan dropped for new filter and fluid. Tranny shop I went to doesn't recommend flush because they keep the same filter in. Keep eye on it, and if it continues talk to tranny shop about rebuild or what is needed to fix it or go 5spd
