[turbo] so how do u rip one apart?
Ok well, after everything got up and running, i was faced with oil in the intake piping and the turbo smoking (which i suppose is again oil getting in the turbine).
Now i'm taking it apart to see what i can do (questions about that will come later ![]() Right now, i got the the compressor side off completely from the middle section. now i've gone to the exhaust and here is where i'm kinda stuck. For the compressor side, to take the wheel out, i had to get the nut off the shaft. I did that pretty easily since the compressor housing itself seperates into 2 sections and i had a clear shot at the nut. now on the exhaust side is a single piece, so it's hard to get to the nut. and its impossible to grab the shaft right underneath the nut (like i did with the compressor side). so how the hell do i get it off? I was thinking of putting two nuts on the compressor side of the shaft and jamming them together and use that as a stoping point, but i'm afraid to break the shaft. so anyone can clue me in? I'll take pics tomorrow. Too sleepy right now. |

I'm kind of confused as to what you are saying, but one you get the compressor wheel off, the shaft can just come out with the turbine wheel still attached, assuming the turbine housing is off.

lol johnathan. its cast iron foo
![]() so yeah here are the pics that this thread is worthless without step by step of what i did: 1. took off the nuts that secured the top half (as i call it) of the compressor housing. ![]() 2. after i got the top part off, i had to unscrew this nut. See how it has a thread on the nut itself (which is 11mm) and the u can secure the bottom portion (9/16"). That came off with some force but rather easily. ![]() ![]() 3. after that, i got the bolts that secured the lower part of the housing to the mid section and took the lower part off completely. ![]() ![]() 4. Now on the exhaust side, i unbolted these bolts, but the turbine side doesn't even move ![]() 5. So here is where i'm stuck. This is the nut for the turbine side. U can see there is some threading on the shaft to press against, the only thing is, i can't access it as easily as i could with the compressor side. A 15mm fits nicely over the triangular nut, but how to secure the lower side i have no clue ![]() ![]() |

That triangular nut...I believe is one piece to the exhaust side of the compressor blades. I could be wrong but it looks like that it is one piece. Maybe there is a retainer on the other side and you can just pull the whole thing out. The bearings for the exhaust side is probably holding it in. Perhas they need pressing out.
?? I have not done this myself..I have seen a few dissasembled. Monday, I would call garrett and see about getting an exploded view cut sheet and see if that will work or see if you can simply get someone on the phone that can help and get you the parts to reseal it. |

Haha, that nut doesnt come off dude.
In the garrett catalog, the shaft and the turbine wheel have one part number. They dont come apart. The nut is triangular like that because they cut it to ballance it. Take the turbine housing off, and the shaft and turbine wheel will come out as one. Nice pics though. ![]() EDIT: here's your exploded view. See #12, ONE PIECE. ![]() |

Dude, that is exactly what he needed and it looked that way to me too...so I got one right for a change
![]() Makes sense. Now he can go forward with his project.. Nice cutsheet! 14 thru 20 and 23 thru 27 needs replacing and 9. I like to replace retainers and clips..look yours over. Make sure the shaft is not scored as well. Hopefully the housing is in good enough shape. Last edited by Bill Roberts; 08-10-2003 at 11:30 AM.. |

ok, i can't take the turbine housing off. And i don't think it's supposed to be that way.
Now this is what i have on the intake side. I removed the retainer pin, but seems that nothing changed... suggestions? Also, that rubber circle around the black center portion... is that the reason i get oil in the intake piping? ![]() |

Parts number 24 is holding it in. They are retainers.
And the bearings are pressed in place..so you have to get everything off that shaft and it will slide out. On that pic above, I see the C-ring still in place. If it were me..to keep from fuking it up..I would take the exhaust housing assembly and send it to garrett and have them redo it for you..and you can put the rest of it back. They may have a core exchange program. |

Does the shaft spin freely? If the shaft or bearinggs are torn up you probably won't be able to slide it out.
