s14 crankshaft position sensor

i have a 1995 s14 ka24de, i found out that my tranny doesnt have a crankshaft position sensor because i have a s13 tranny instead, i just want to know if i would be able to pass smog without the crankshaft position sensor?

On S14's the crank sensor is at the top of the bellhousing. The speed sensor should be one of the last sensors closest to the shifter. The crank sensor usually has a metal plate cover.

i do have the check engine light on because my tranny doesnt have the crank sensor and i think my car is obd1 and abd2 because it has a gray connector by the fuse panel and the other one is a white connector by the passenger side.

all 1995 vehicles and older are considered (and tested as) obd1. If it were obd2 it would have the trapezoid shaped connector within 15 inches of the steering wheel. Since you have a check engine light you will not legally pass a smog inspection. Are you saying that your bell housing doesnt have a hole drilled for the crank sensor, or that it does and there is nothing in the hole?

the bell housing doesn't have a hole drilled for the crank sensor because i have a s13 tranny instead of a s14 tranny, then whats the white connector by the passenger side for? one time i went to a mechanic to check my check engine light and he connected the scanner to that white connector, the scanner was a red snap-on brand.

Well, either way, your car will not pass a California smog inspection with a CEL on. I would suggest that you drill a hole in the bell housing above where the CKP tone ring is and install the CKP. Also, OBD2 standards weren't required until 1996, therefore your car is still OBD1.

You can clear the code, but as soon as you start the car the ECU will pick up that the sensor is not there and toss a CEL. So you can take out your tranny and drill the hole for the CAS, or you can wire your check engine light to your oil pressure sender.

That won't work in CA, they will still plug into the car and scan it, any codes stored or unreadiness will show up.

Only if it is odbII. If it is ODBI then he is home free.
Personally I have never done it, but I have a buddy that did his 95 and it worked like a charm. Light came on like it is supposed to when the key is turned on and it goes out when the car is started.

Sorry to bump an old thread but i just have the same problem. Now is it bad to run without a crank position sensor? I'm going to smog it soon, and the check engine light stays off enough for it to smog, this is an obd1 s14, thanks guys.

edit: also someone told me that the 95 s14 sensor is not on the bellhousing? i dont think this is true.

You should know better than to ask something you haven't fully researched. The crank position sensor is an OBD monitoring part only, it does not affect engine operation or driveability.

All CPS are are found in the same spot, top of the bellhousing, on all S14s.
