Folks who have gotten the Modified Exhaust ticket

So, I have to get this thing taken care of pretty soon. I was wondering if they actually go outside and check that you have a stock exhaust, or do they just take your ten bucks and say see you later? Has anyone gotten this ticket around Pasadena? Thanks in advance.

cheers,

Charles

I got one 3 years ago in Glendale. It was a fix-it ticket, so all I did was put back my stock exhaust and had a cop sign the ticket off. I got another one about a year ago, but they don't give out fix-it tickets anymore. I just went to the court cashier and plead guilty, and paid the fine, it was around $200.

Mine was a $10 fixit two years ago.
My tanabe was leaking, so I fixed it and showed up at CHP with it.
A Cop came out, checked out my exhaust, and told me to rev it up. It was quiet with the silencer in, and he wrote me off.
But this was before they stopped giving out fix it tickets.

Gotta make an appointment with a state bar ref. I'd suggest the ref station at El Camino college in Torrance. They're cool as fuck over there.

Wait, I think I got a fix-it, because the cop checked "yes" under "correctable violation". Doesn't that mean it's a fix-it? It's code 27150(a) if that makes any difference. Thanks for responses, they are helpful.

cheers,

In that case, put back your stock muffler, or put a silencer on, then have a cop sign it off. Then pay $10.

Both of you, wrong.
It HAS to be signed off by a ref. Then you go to court, see the judge, tell him you got it fixed, and pay 10 dollars.

Its a big pain in the ass just to handle an exhaust ticket, but it must be done.

Really? All of my friends that have gotten exhaust tickets this year always had "non-correctable" checked off, and then they had to go to the ref. Maybe the cop just made a mistake and checked off "correctable."

Yes, its correctable. We're talking exhausts here, not "illegal" engines. lol
It is indeed correctable, but you can't just get it signed off like the average fix-it ticket. Only a BAR ref can write it off.

I got one a few years back and had to go to the ref. The ref took a db meter out to my car and placed it about 18 inches from my exhaust and revved up to like 4 grand. There was a set limit he was looking for and it was below it by like 3db so all was well. In the end I got a certificate that states the exhaust is legal so I don't have to bother with "profiling" cops who pull me over for my exhaust.

In SF, there's no actuly fix it ticket for modified exhaust. I got mine 2 years ago, while I put my stock back, cops don't sign off for me, they said there's no fix-it-ticket for modified exhaust, even you put the stock back, you still have pay the fine.
No sure about other areas.

I have on as of July 29, 2006. It depends on the cops whether they mark it correctable or not. If it is correctable, it would be $10 after a state ref visit. I have a non-correctable violation and it is going to cost me $128 in the county of Santa Clara (price per violation varies according to county). I could have just plead guilty and pay the fine, but I'll go back to stock and pay the fine , and just hope they dont do test only on my car next year. I also have a Enviromental Emission violation and that shit costing me $468.

I had gotten a muffler ticket in the summer, and he popped my hood, didnt give me any ticket other than a non correctable muffler ticket. ALL muffler tickets should be non correctable. due to new laws. i went to court and i was going to fight it but the judge told me he would make it correctable before i even said anything. therefore i put the stock exhaust on and went to CHP and they signed it off. thats all it took. but far as i know all muffler tickets should be non correctable for now on. or at least on fast cars haha

I just got one this past summer, about 3 months ago and they made it correctable they also got me for modified intake and made it correctable as well. Don't know when they passed the new law but they should be correctable. I may be wrong. Best thing to do is have copper friends buy them lunch and they sign off all your tickets.

They can pop my hood all they want, my car is still 100% emissions legal. I was just trying to figure out what I needed to do, to get the ticket cleared up. Thanks for the responses, I have a good idea as to what I need to do. I went to Midas and they quoted me about $300 to bend up a custom exhaust with a resonator and magnaflow muffler. Does anyone have a stock S13 exhaust that they don't want? I'll give you a 6-pack!

cheers,
C

300 for a shitty exhaust is quite expensive. i went and got 3" mandrel bent with magnaflow for less then 300.

go to court hope they make it correctable.

Aren't those tickets issued for noise violation, not emissions?

I dont know what the laws are in california but here in new hampshire im a certifed state inspector. the law says that the exhaust must exit in the manufactures stock location and it must not exeed manufacture loudness spec, which is bull cause the law is open to interpretation. the law was changed last year, so modifed exhausts are legal. also we dont have any smog laws so i dont have any emisson stuff on my car. were supposed to have it, but i do all my own inspections.

Whoa, this game of telephone is getting out of hand. I feel that I should clear things up, and maybe this'll be a useful thread for people in my shoes in the future. Anyway, let's see. I got pulled over by CHP just after the 605 merges onto the 210. There wasn't too much traffic, so I wound it up a little and cruised on over to the fast lane. As I was moving over, I saw a CHP in the corner of my eye, so I slowed down to 65 and just cruised. After a minute or two, the CHP got behind me and stalked me for a good mile or two. He was probably running my plates, or just waiting for me to screw up. I didn't screw up, but then he flashed the lights, so I abided, knowing I did nothing wrong. Turns out, he pulled me over because my car is "too loud". I was polite, and gave him my info, and he gave me the ticket, and told me that, YES, it is correctable, and that I just have to go to the court and pay 10 bucks. He didn't specify what about I had to correct, so that's why I started this thread, to see what others had to do to get the ticket taken care of. The only reason I would guess that a cop would mark it "non-correctable" is maybe he's having a bad day? who knows? At any rate, I'm going to buy a quieter, more inconspicuous exhaust, paint it black, and see if I can get cleared. I'll update when I get this all squared away. Wish me luck, haha.

cheers,
C

damn S13 Charlie - the cop didn't give ya much info there... Which courthouse are you supposed to go to? It makes a difference sometimes...

DP_Michele G ... I went to that very same CHP station (off Windsor) to get my latest noise violation taken care of, but they were closed - good thing! I think the only stock thing in my bay are the brake hardlines Only bummer is that I went to the Glendale courthouse (for a different correctable violation) and the Sheriff said he wasn't able to sign off on my correctable exhaust violation, because of the code number. Any idea if your Altadena Sheriffs can take care of it?

Good thread - keep it goin ~

Any idea if your Altadena Sheriffs can take care of it?

Good thread - keep it goin ~
Ref station, maybe? At the one I went to (El Camino College in Torrance), they ref guy told me he doesn't care if people have illegal engines unless thats what the ticket is for. So, if all you need signed off is the exhaust, this guy wouldn't give you shit for the SR.
Cool state refs FTW. lol
