pyrometer problem...

was moving a gauge to a different position, and since running the wiring back through firewall to take it out is such a major pain in the ass, i decided to cut the main signal wire and then connect it back using 2 bullet connectors. Well, it didn't work, and hte gauge is not registerring anything.

When i cut the wire, there were 2 main (pos and neg) wrapped in a shielding tin foil with a copper line running on the outside of the tin foil amd all of that was covered by a thick sleeve. When i put the gauge back, i never connected the copper wires together. Can someone tell me what that copper wire is for and is that the reason for my gauge not working? Or is it because i get too much noise for the gauge to register anything?

I can solder the wires back together to the state they were originally in, but id rather not, as i can easily imagine how painful it will be to be running all that wiring back and forth through the firewall every time i need to take the gauge out

i can post some pics a bit later if i didnt explain it clear enough.

thanks

What kind of cheap-ass gauge is this that doesn't have some sort of connector anywhere on it?

I would suggest re-connecting the copper mystery wire if I were you. If it had 3 wires to begin with and you only re-connected two of them, I would expect something not to work.

it actually has 2 connections. One is at the thermocouple, which is all hte way in the engine bay. The second one is preset for ambient tempreture, so you can't take it off at all. All pyrometers work that way.

aight, gonna go try connecting the copper wire. hope it'll work.

I'm assuming by pyrometer you're referring to an EGT gauge?

All EGT's most certainly do not have to be ambient temperature referenced...in fact none of the half dozen or so different brands I've used have been.
