What?

the SCCA is always looking for new members and ways to expand, this is a no brainer.

I was hoping they would come up with a more grassroots approach at first, but oh well.

The SCCA doesnt really have a great MArketing dept... but this is really cool. I like the fact that drifting is getting some mainstream credibility in America. I really hope they dont jsut hype the crap out of it though.

I think this will lead to th organisation of more drift events in mor eplaces, for less money, and could build the foundation for a really huge base of great American Drifters.

God... I sound liek a PR guy. Seiously, though this could be a great thing.

Maybe stateside sponsorships will pick up as this becomes more popular. Also, I'd love to see some guys with 03 Cobras start showing up for these events. The more legitimized "drifting" becomes as a sport, the more higher end cars you will see there (Vettes, Vipers, Cobras, etc)....which can all be set up to drift. I think that would be pretty cool to see.

Gimme a fucking break. They put on a terribly planned and orchestrated event whose saving grace was simply the performances and presence of the awesome drivers & their cars. That makes them a 'leading promoter and expert'?
They're the leading promoter because nobody else is doing it!, and based on the D1GP event, they are by NO means experts.

yeah, what Kev. said. What a bunch of horseshit. their events are HORRIBLY arranged and shit. bah.... whatever

As for US sponsorships... Im just gonna quote Shino (Owns a shop in japan that sponsors drift events, and she is also good friends with Society drift team). "US version of Japanese company don't know what 'real' drift is even if a Silvia slide across their shiny showroom floor."

hum... it appears that we are doing to drifting what we did to Import Drag Racing, even though Import Drags had more time to start out at a lower level. Look at it now. Everyone is big money sponsorship and no "little guys" can come out and compete. What a shame...

Yep. the mainland shoudl have done like the 50th state. More development, growing, learning, etc... over here in cali you can get a huge hookup just how your car looks. Bah.

I think this is kinda funny... We have a "Pro cone dodging" series. Where are the drift tracks? Where is Slipstream orginizing competitions on tracks, not paved infields of Nascar short tracks.

If SCCA can help bring more track time to more enthusiasts, great! If drifting is the catch phrase, fine.
So far, drifting is not getting any bad press. That is a good thing. Its way different than the import street drag non-sense that lead to the rice revolution. But then again its only a matter of time until kids in preludes and accords start attempting e-brake turns on city streets and crashing.
Just today I was down at the San Diego region autox and there where a bunch of kids with Option2 and "I love drifting" stickers at an angle on there back bumpers, one was a Celica GTS. Drifting is not going to be free from ricers, wannabes, and people who make it more difficult for others to enjoy because of their irresponsible actions.
So if the SCCA can help keep it on the track, and available the people who want it, great!
I am no drifter, I am a "grip" racer. So maybe I don't "get it". But I have never heard of SCCA screwing anything up. Lets just hope that idiot companies like Slipstream Global either figure out how to organize an event, or pack up and leave it to pros.

I see you have spent no time in Hawaii in the past 4 years...

Lets just put it this way, there are "drifting taskforces" out at 3 of the major "spots". Unmarked cars, plain clothed cops, arrest you ON site weather you were watching or doing.

You guys just wait till the media comes out to your Drift Day or whatever event and talks all nice to you and talks about how they want to run a story on drifting, then uses the footage of that in a mix with footage of car crashes and street racing, oh, and they like to use catchy titles like "Drifting into Danger"

you will love it...good times had by all

hell, we have been doing it organized and on a track for 3 years now...and I STILL don't think anyone is ready for that kinda events. I'll be honest, I think our "best driver" could beat the mainlands "best driver", and I STILL don't think anyone around is good enough to make 10k for drifting. And your right, where are our drift tracks? Where are we supposed to hold said events? Oh, let me guess, big parking lots w/ lots of cones, right?

Ok, so they are gonna make a drift series... $10 says they don't come to Hawaii, mostly because there is no real money to be made here...

I would love for someone who runs the BM High events to come out and orgainze even a LITTLE track event here. I bet it would be 100000x different that how anyone runs it here.

As boro240 and I were just talking about, it seems they threw the SCCA name in there to fool people into thinking there is some kinda REAL deal going on here. Well guess what people... Chris (white drift Camaro) and another drifter guy were KICKED OUT of an SCCA event less than one year ago for "drifting"... let me say that again... LESS THAN ONE YEAR AGO! SCCA musta recently fallen victim to the "drifting = $$ bug"

but you know what, who really cares. what are we really doing besides just bitching about how "our sport" is getting way to over exposed? If they kill it, they kill it. Oh well. I say fk it. Drift like moneys no object and have fun like your doing this 10 years ago...

mmmmm...sweet milk from the cash cow...

so they put a new name on the same old shit, and take on SCCA to give themselves more credibility. i dont know who they think theyre fooling. and wow, SCCA sells out bigtime. i used to have respect for them as a true motorsports association.

SCCA BANNED drifting in the past. now they see it as a hot ticket, but still dont take it seriously at all. this sort of thing in no way helps the sport grow. if anything, its going to kill it.

"The story you are about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent."

Fentruck: this is what you call overexposure
Fentruck: happens a lot in the music industry
Fentruck: take the band rembrant for example
Fentruck: they had a good song
Fentruck: was put on friends opening
IdhitMogi: rembrants...
IdhitMogi:
Fentruck: WHATEVER
Fentruck: totally killed their career
IdhitMogi: ill be there for youuuuuuu
Fentruck: or like vanilla ice
Fentruck: or new kids on the block
Fentruck: granted these sort of people are short lived anyway
Fentruck: but still
IdhitMogi: dont you just love america...
Fentruck: i think a lot of it has to do with the desire to be like japan
Fentruck: or thinking that we CAN be even
Fentruck: the drift scene in america is the drift scene in japan YEARS ago
Fentruck: a decade even
Fentruck: ok maybe not that far
Fentruck: and theirs differences too
Fentruck: cause our scene is heavily influenced by theirs
Fentruck: but you get the idea

bonus points if anyone can tell me where the name "Fentruck" comes from.

It's SCCA PRO, not SCCA club.. I think it'll be interesting when some of the top drivers from the speed world challenge end up with drift rides.. like Boris Said, Pierre Kleinenberg, Peter Cunningham, Bill Auberlen, or Randy Pobst.. I bet they could drift with the best from Japan with minimal practice..

That would be cute... Realtime Racing is in the city next to mine, and if Cunningham gets a S15 (he already has Nismo support) or a 350Z (I haven't seen them drift well yet, I haven't really seen teh JIC car race yet . It's just going to be really shitty when ricers inevitably do start drifting on the streets.

Wow man, you basically just said what I was going to say. I would put money down too that they wouldn't hold an event in Hawaii. I remember when I ran in an SCCA event last year the guys running the event said right off "NO DRIFTING! We do not support drifting in any way because drifting is not the fastest way around a corner! We do not support drifting!! NO DRIFTING! If you drift, we will kick you off the course!" And wow.....how times have changed in so short a span. The sport just isn't ready for this much exposure just yet. It hasn't been developed enough. Everyone and their mom wants to organize "the premier pro drift circuit in the US" when there really isn't one to promote.

I think this point should be reiterated since people aren't understanding that.

Also, just because it's SCCA PRO doesn't mean it's going to only be a professional series. It just means the events will be head in hopes of making a profit (unlike non-profit SCCA Club events).
