Just finished a swap.. car won't even crank.

So I just finished my automatic/ka24e -> 5 speed/ka24de swap, hooked every connection up, and tried starting it. I'm aware of jumping the clutch safety switch, but I had a hard time looking for the plug that needed to be jumped. I found it yesterday UNDER the passenger fuse box... is this the right one? It's a 1990 s13. I had the jumped connector attached to another plug that was similar to the plug where it's supposed to connect, but the car wouldn't even start at all. When I turn the key, the relay in the driver side fuse box clicks, but not the passenger side one. Once I found the connection under the passenger fuse box, I connected the jumped connector to it and tried turning the car. A stream of smoke came from the engine bay, right around the area of the starter. It made a little bit of noise when I tried starting it, but for half a second. But now the relay in the passenger side clicks. We pulled out the starter and hooked it up to a battery. The motor spins, but the gear will not slide upwards when engaged. Does the starter have to be connected to the car in order for the gear to slide out? Or should it do it regardless when you give the starter some power? It's either I jumped the wrong connection, or my butchered up harness had a short somewhere. But... I'm not sure if the engine harness has any type of connection to the starter. But either way, I'm picking up a new harness to replace the already spliced up one on the car right now.

The good: I can hear the fuel pump whirlin' in the back

Also.. the only things I have hooked up to the trans is the reverse lamp switch and the speed sensor. Iir, I don't need any of the 4th, 5th, neutral position sensor to get the car running... am I correct?
