Breaking in my build?
I'm building my RB25 right now. Full overhaul, forged internals, aem ems 2, water pump, oil pump, bored to 86.5, built head, 270 tomei cams, 6266 turbo. What is the best way to break it in? I have no clue how to tune haha so Break it in on the first tune? Need some advice thanks. I tried to search the thread, couldn't really find anything.

Find a good tuner. Try not to start it until you get to him. Let him setup your stand alone for intial start up. He should be strapping it on a dyno and putting it through break in cycle on the dyno. Bring extra oil and filter.
Basically find a reputable tuner and ask him what steps he can take on your build. Going to cost money though.

I'm actually pretty damn close to you too. I'm out in Eagle Mountain just above Westlake High. Richard Gibby is awesome at tuning, he tunes Brandon Wicknick's car. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Racin...06156936179115

I'm in a similar predicament, how do you guys feel about a base tune to at least just drive it to the shop?
I picked up an APEXi L-Jetro so I think I could get at least running semi-decent to get me on the road and to the tuner. |

I'm just going to trailer mine there, just to be safe.

To break in a new engine, you have to load it up to seat the new rings. Cruising on the street won't do that. Furthermore, if you try to load up the engine untuned, you will likely damage it. Just trailer it or have it towed to a dyno. It'll be cheaper than redoing the engine.

carl h from ma motorsports told me this get break in oil start up let it warm up keep at 3 grand for 30 mins to let the rings seat properly after that change oil and get tuned on the dyno!

In the past I've given my tuner my ECU and had him write a break in tune for the first 1000km. The first thing I've done when I get the ECU is run it for 20 mins at 2000rpm to seat the rings.
Not sure if this is the best method but it sure works. ![]() |

So what was dialed back boost, timing or fuel or all the above. The gt28r can make 300hp with 550 on an sr20det pretty easy.

everyone overtimes these (JDM Nissan/Toyota) motors
use 9* of timing for 12-15psi off a t28 on an sr20det "knock" from these engines usually means too high temperature and too low octane. Octane and temp has to match. If you throw too much timing at it, just a little too much (say 13-15* btdc), and you wont notice at all. That should not trip the knock sensor and no audible ping. But the rod bearing will get eaten up and the piston may fracture over time. Takes a couple years but... now that It HAS been years I have seen this happen to one hundred+ engines and you notice there are so few left. |
