Water pump gone?

1992 s13 Silvia sr20det
Does not leak coolant when hot/running.
However leave it overnight and next morning this is a small puddle of coolant underneath.
Rinse and repeat.
Is this the water pump gone? Or something else?

Depends where it leaks. If its from that weep hole maybe because expansion contraction? Might be a sign for replacement?

Sometimes this can be the most simple solution.

If it leaks under the pump, try a gasket/pump.
If it leaks under the radiator, is it the drain plug? does your rad have a petcock?

These little practices can help you a lot when finding a leak.

Even lay some paper down over night if you're having a had time figuring out exactly where it's dripping from.

Go to autozone, rent a coolant system pressure tester. Pressurize the system to 10psi.... watch for leaks and listen for a hiss.... you're welcome

check all the lines under the intake manifold, thats where mine leaked from

I will try to pinpoint where it is leaking from, I have been laying newspaper underneath but hard to tell exactly where it’s coming from.

It’s not any of the hoses under the intake manifold I replaced them all just under a month ago.

+1 for get a coolant pressure tester

and definitely thoroughly check all the lines under the intake manifold. many times those never get replaced till one bursts

don't assume it cant leak in a certain spot because you just replaced something recently. there is a good chance that isn't it leaking, but you shouldn't rule it out. The hose or the clamps could have been faulty from the beginning.


newspaper on the ground isn't the best way to try and pin point. if its leaking from some place like a high spot, it could trail down the side of something, such as a hose, or a portion of the intake manifold, then drop a couple of inches where its really leaking from. Ive seen this happen before. a thorough visual inspection may tell you what you need to know, but no guarantees.


I would do what Chinky said, a pressure test, that will tell you what you need to know.

Yea I’m thinking pressure test will be the only way I’ll be able to pinpoint it.

What’s got me stumped is I park it up at work for 8 hours...no leaks, then when I park it overnight at home the next morning there is a puddle...wtf

Also I have replaced all the heater hoses and clamps under manifold and tightened them well so pretty sure I can rule that out.

So I haven’t been able to pressure test it yet...but I have semi pinpointed it to one of the heater hoses between the block and the firewall.

What I still don’t understand is it doesn’t leak at all while driving or if parked up during the day...only time it leaks is when it’s parked up overnight.

Has anyone else had this issue that would be able to enlighten me?

Could be one of those things where just takes the right condition for the hose to leak. I say drain your system and inspect the heater hoses and replace them. And be more thorough under the intake. That is if you dont rent a pressure tester.
