Question Helmet Question

Hi all...
I was just wondering what kind of helmet is needed in ROAD RACING/DRIFTING/

I just got this helmet called KBC and it says:

tk 77
snell
DOT

Can I use that on the track and for drifting?

make sure its sa2000 approved but most drifting events let snell95 pass. anything with ma2000 or sa2000 i think is good to go.

get an SA2000 helmet, not the MA. If you intend to do real road/club racing (not just autox), you'll be required to have an automotive (SA) helmet.

Main difference between SA and MA is SA has nomex inner lining so your face doesn't burn off when you crash and your car bursts into flames.

if it is a KBC is is M2000 not SA I use my Shoei M2000 for all of my racing stuff and it works for everything except SCCA Club racing events

Nomex is nice but the SA helmets are signifigantly more expensive

M95 helmets will not be allowed anywhere after this year. Helmets have a 10 year life in racing.

SA2000 if you think you might race or auto-x in the next 10 years. Just get an M if not.

M means motorcycle
2000 is the year of the standard it follows. they upgrade the standards every 5 years.

as mentioned before, M helmets are good enough for most local and small events. for events sponsored by larger sanctioning bodies, they start mandating SA helmets. most events will allow helmets up to 2 standards old.
until the 2005 helmets come out, 95 helmets are okay to use. after the 2005 helmets come out, 2000 is the oldest we can use.

SA2005 won't be on sale till Oct. Some of the new SA2000 meet SA2005 specs but can't advertize this till Oct.

You should also replace your helmet every 5 years due to wear. So, waiting till Oct is a waste.
